Can reconnoissance missions for hawks be automated? I frequently find myself having to send hawks out on the same reconnoissance mission turn after turn in order to keep an eye on a certain area. It would be nice if the hawk would continue to watch an area until you stop the mission.

Good suggestion. Having to micromanage them is the very reason i never bother to build them. That and they AI in .30 doesn't seem to use stealth units so their 'see stealth' if that is still enabled isn't needed.

Could there perhaps be another way to implement the hawks?

As far as I understand the way it currently works is that the haks are "planes" (without an attack) and the Rangers are "Aircraft Carriers".
Perhaps the Hawks should be done as a simple unit that has a visibility Range of 2-3?? Does anyone even use the ability to send the hawks in a specific direction? Or, asked another way: Would the loss of that ability weight up against the ease of management?

That's not a bad idea but the visibility range would have to be very high in order to see further than a cities borders. I guess you could just use them with rangers etc. I guess this would work if it is too hard to make the hawks maintain a recon mission. As they are now the hawks are not really worth the effort.

I've thought exactly the same thing about recon aircraft in vanilla civ.

Aaand they're back :)

Currently the Worldbuilder gives
Hawks: Amurites, Bannor, Calabim, Clan of Embers, Doviello, Elohim, Grigori, Hippus, Illians, Khazad, Kuriotates, Ljosalfar, Luchuirp, Malakim, Mercurians
Ravens: Infernals, Sheaim, Sidar, Svartalfar
Parrots: Balseraphs, Lanun

Hmm...fewer Ravens than I remember.

Sidar ... ravens. Must be even fewer ravens than that because in my current game I play Sidar and they uses hawks (32a).

Wierd, the Worldbuilder gives them Ravens. Sure they're not just called hawks? All that was changed was the graphics and the icon, not the name.

Yeah, they have unique graphics again, but the name is still "Hawk." It should probably be changed to "Bird"

It used to be that all the evil civs (except Balseraphs) had ravens

If anything hawks need to be toned down and the hawks / birds that are available now rather placed at Animal Mastery or Feral Bond. (They are so powerful on so many levels that unit really seems broken. Even if put there they whould be extremely powerful.). With perhaps an added even more powerful Bird at Commune with Nature (perhaps with the ability to investigate or other nice things.).

The Birds from Hunting should give just +1 Vision Range and see Invis for the carrier imo (and on their own have Vision +1 and see invis.). Whould still be really good and remove the need to manually scout. Also the base ones should lose the ability to rebase if that is done. (to delay item / commander carrier-pidgeoning a bit. Its whould be strong enough at Animal mastery / feral Bond still)

As of now invisibility (which is not an everyday thing to get) is utterly valuless if you use hawks against it. If you add to that the many other benefits and it just gets nuts for a mere 20 Hammers.

Planes recon-ing a peak is just the same in vanilla civ.
