is it good to automatic the workers when you are spreading out conquering foreign lands

Of course, it's allways best to micromanage workers. But if you are too lazy, you might automate one or another. But be sue to use shift-a for automation; shift-a will never change existing improvements on any tile. It may alter them like building a railroad, but doesn't change mining to irrigation etc.

another hint: Your sig is a little big! you should shorten it (AFAIK limit is 5 lines, see forum rules), before the mods get
:saiyan:

Automate only with shift-a, and only after you have like 50+ workers.
Also I agree. That sig is obscenly large. Make (like me) or find a smaller one.

I've never dared automate, but I'll try Shift-A now.

Scary. It's like Mickey Mouse and the animated brooms in Sorcerer's Apprentice. How do I stop it?

Not only it is not good, it also is very very bad.:nono:
Using shift-A is not a good choice either. Your workers tend to run in the newly conquered parts of your empire and that is not what you want, because
 • you don't want to loose workers to fast enemy units
 • you want to build roads/railroads fast ( one turn) by gangs of workers
 • you don't want your workers to spread out
 • improving tiles of your "old" cities usually gives better roi
 • you want to starve conquered cities; therefore tile i,provement is (not yet) necessary
If you are just too lazy, use ctrl-shift-i (worker stays with assigned city, leaves improvements).:goodjob:

I will automate them with shift-A in certain situations later in the game.

If the "foreign land" is conquered on my continent, and I now own the continent, then shift-A for workers on that continent is still OK, since they will not be working near enemy front lines. Just make sure all of the improvements you want for your established cities are already done.

Generally this happens once I start to get control of the game and workers are building lots of railroads to improve commerce. They may also be adding irrigation and mines for cities that are now getting higher populations. In this case I believe they may automatically clean up pollution if it happens as well.

Otherwise, I agree wtih Tao on limiting improvements to a city only.

Micromanaging workers takes a lot of extra time, but I do it to gain as much advantage as I can over the AI (why should I let the computer control ANY of MY decisions).

Sort of. But
 • they don't cleanup pollution with priority but tend to mindlessly improve unused tiles and
 • if you have e.g. 2 polluted tiles, one worker will start on each, even though it is much better to finish them one after another and finally
 • tiles remain unworked even once the pollution is cleared; hence if you don't notice the automatic cleanup, you also don't assign a citizen to it
I could't agree more. And if I really want to optimize, I convert tiles between irrigation and mining to really maximize city output.

I don't automate until after every tile is improved. Then they can run around cleaning up pollution. But if I'm milking I won't even automate them then because it's important that I put the citizen back to work after cleaning.

I also don't automate workers .
They often built not the things I wanted or leaving my boarder so that barbarians could kill them easy.

After roads connect new cities and I connect all local resources I automate workers, usually for the local city only, keeping existing improvements. (ctrl+shift+i I think) Also, if there are lots of forest, I like to put at least one worker to auto clear forest- ctrl+f

My micromanagement of workers depends on the game (fun vs score/goal). In a personal game, I'll auto them so it goes quicker. In a downloaded game (tourney, gotm, etc) I'll micromanage them. When I do let them fly on their own it's either shift-a or ctrl-n. My cavalry like roads.

yeah i think it is good to automate. the reason when you have a big emiper the size of a continent. it works real well. lets you work your army other than workers. allows you to expand and conquer.

But only if you use shift-A and do it after all vitally important worker tasks are done (semi-)manually....

of course but what if you are out waring with other civs and you don't feel like having to put up with the hassle of moving your soldiers

If you don't want to put up with the hassle of manually managing your workers, then by all means, automate them! First and foremost the game should be FUN!

Just be aware that if you don't manually manage at least some of your workers, it will be difficult to win on levels above Warlord. ;)

I manage the workers to the point where there are too many. Then I start automating with shift A. But I always keep ten to twenty under my control to do specific tasks!
