@ WillJ
I'd be willing to give it a try if you want only the face to be replaced.

This isn't an avatar per se, although it could become one, but I want to make an image transparent - basically, it is a circle, I want to cut off the corners and make them transparent. How would I do that?

This is the image I meant:

Eran of Arcadia:

Here's your pic, with the edges transparent. I used the GIMP, the free photoshop alternative. Simply add an Alpha Channel (Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel) use the wand tool to select the edges around the ring (make sure feathering and antialiasing are off). Then Layers > Transparency > Threshold Alpha and set that to 255 for full transparency. Voila! :)

Spoiler Here's the ring with transparent edges :

EDIT: Ansar:

I don't know how red you want the guy, so I've used my own judgement here. Making it transparent is quite difficult, especially since the people are antialiased, and the quality isn't perfect. Maybe someone else can make it transparent, I wouldn't mind knowing how it can be done...

Will J: if possible, when you upload the photo of yourself, try to be facing the same direction as Rocky (i.e. almost in profile, with second eye still visible. It's probably possible to create the image from a head shot using some distroction effects, but it'd just be cleaner and easier

Perfect! I just wanted it red, but you made it better! :)

Is that one supposed to be for these forums? Then you can actually make it non-transparant with the same colour as the background of the avatars as the "Background" colour, and keep the semi-transparant anti-alias.

Also, I redid one of the guys as a vector mask and copied him over, so I've got a transparent version now, as png that is.

I can see by this post (and your postcount) that you are new here. At the bottom of the page there are different skins, so the background will be different for everyone.

Thanks :), it was a matter of selecting the brown guy, and tweaking the colour balance.
Yeah, I had tried to do it on Paint, but all the colors came in a shade of brown.

How did you change the color balance?

Nah, I didn't want it as an avatar.

I needed it for the cover page of an assignment.

I use Ancient CFC, so his post would apply. ;)

Ah, didn't notice. Thanks! :)

And it doesn't matter if it's png then?

So you basically recreated the picture using a vector based person? That is the ultimate way to do it, if you have the time. It has the benefit of being sharper too, and thus allowing the transparancy to be perfect.

@Jamesds: Perfect, thanks.

No problem :)

I selected the brown guy, and changed the hue, sat, lum. If you apply it to the whole pic, then it will change everything. The key is to select only what you want to change.

So yes, that's what I did. I hope you don't mind me doing it?
Doing the original picture transparant and without quality loss would be hard. And timewise, since I only did one and copy-pasted & resized it, it didn't take that long time.

Anyways, I like the idea of a thread like this, it's useful for those who don't have the programs to do it themselves. ;)

Do you think this will work?

Oh please take away those white lines and make it comfort...

Is this what you wanted?

EDIT: Here's a slightly enhanced version which you can choose to use at your own leisure

Oh yeah....I completely forgot about that. Well, I found the original from the Wikipedia article and resized it without so much loss of detail, so here's a gif which is less than 4kb.

EDIT:

I don't see why you need it less then 0.8kb, and that's almost impossible unless I make it black and white!
