Avatar Theft

I think that revoking custom avatars all together is a pretty strict. We only have one person doing this ( :mischief: ) so I don't think it's all that problematic. But when you have an avatar for so long and it defines your personality, it's not a very ncie thing to take it away and make it your own. :p

Yeah true, but that's how things work. It's totally unfair I agree but it happens all the time.

For example, in Flordia, there's a new law that requires women who have a child and don't know the biological father that they must post all aspects of their sexual lives and names of men that could possibly be the dad of the child. It's unfair just because of one high-profile case where a biological dad took away a kid, but it was passed and it's still standing.

Stealing avatars on purpose should be a punishable crime but ones that are only on accident should be warned, although that would put pressure on the mods even more with another crime...

My suggestion is, if you want to steal avatar, visit other forums, find an avatar you like, and steal it. :D That's how I got that animated black mage FF9 avatar. ;)

I use the one here. :) Of course, I've seen a few others use it, too..

A nice idea, but bear in mind that if you come back from an avatar poaching quest with a picture of Ming the Merciless then don't expect AoA to take too kindly to it. Unless you are a scenario designer then I think it would be churlish to claim ownership of a Civ unit (I'd like to see the rush for the Civ 3 scout), but if you have gone to the trouble to create or at least find a custom avatar then you should be entitled to some protection.

Why would anyone want to steel an avatar anyway? Haven't you got sufficient imagination to create a decent one of your own? I can understand the theft problems in the "old days" of a limited number of avatrs being available, but not now

Rodgers, why do people spam?
Flame?
Insult?
Try to hack the admin panel?

Stealing an avatar flows alomg the same lines, some people just love to cause problems, immaturity is usually the cause of most of those things.

Wow. Well, let me say Perfection DID pm me. He said he wanted to add a mustache to it I believe. I said sure. I figured it would be different enough. Of course, Starlifter is the man who owns the copyright per se on my av so he would have ultimate say. :) Tis true though, there are literally billions of avatars out there so really no overlap is necessary but whatever.

Maybe he wanted an avatar that said "Caddish Bastard..." :D

I am assuming he got Switch's okay on his new choice? Or is it not required as it is Civvish, although it is Switch's by majority's definition?

I take and lay unofficial claim to the Pirate. I chose it before custom avatars, and have not seen anyone else using it. This claim has absolutely no weight, and is not enforcable by anything other than my quiet scorn for whosoever takes it.

Notice has been served.

;)

I made an offhand remark that he should take it if he would miss my avatar so much... so he did. I wasn't expecting him to do it (silly me), but he did it. It kind of ticked me off, but I'm not going to say anything about it as I announced that I would no longer be using it. However, it would have been nice if he had waited until I'd settled on a new one...

Really I don't see how anyone could be gotten even slightly mad at for taking a well known person's civvish avatar. The civvish avatars are open to anyone, and anyone can use any one they want. Custom avatars however, that's another story....

You have to go in deeper and look for the problem. They come from broken families. Bad childhoods. And now they resorted to theft, as if they are taking their inner anger out on life/other person's avatar.

j/k. :D

Of course then there's the newbies who don't know what avatars are used (or don't want to bother browsing the forums to see ones aren't used).

I don't think we should make anybody who uses the same gallery avatar, as they ARE open to everyone, but it's just not polite to steal somebody's avatar and make it your own sometimes. :ack:

Maybe it should be classified under "social snafu".

Do you mind if I give them a copy of the PM?

Instead of punishments and warnings and bans, why not implement the honor system?

Like that being honorable would get you a good reputation and anything bad you do - porn, violence, spam - will get you a hit on your profile. Like how you get a rep hit in the AIs eyes. If they did something klutzy they'd get it on the profile - and we could view it.

I planned on staying with the same Civ1 armor avatar but then somebody came along, picked almost the same name and also used the Civ1 armor as avatar. Then I decided it was time for a custom avatar. I don't know how long I'll use it, Napster has been gone for so long already...;)

I don't care but I doubt anyone else does either... Unless you're getting threats and hate pms... ;)

Floppa has already confirmed that he sent the PM and thats enough for most people...

Congratulations Ren, for winning on Diety and your avator is growing on me so I may have to steal it ;)

Napster is dead. Literally. It got approval from a judge to liquadate its assets. So it's gone. Period. Too bad - it was a huge hit w/ millions of visitors knocking down and downloading music like hell. Now that it's not so easy to do it now, we're all being driven to the underground in downloading music.
