Do you like the word? Think its funny? Why do we use it? Why don't we call the thing a picture? And who came up with the word?

I like the word. I voted that I like it too. I don't really think the word fits with "funny little picture" that we use for our icons, but whatever.

av·a·tar (ave-tär)
n.

1. The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form.
2. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.
3. A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar.

The avatar is the worldly incarnation of a diety.

It is a great word for our picture thingees.

It is how we choose to represent ourselves in the virtual world of the forums.

Well, this sure was random...

anyway, If you think the same way about ANY word beyond "a," you begin to wonder why that word was there in the first place. For example, wagon. Wa-gon. wagon. w-a-g-o-n. A box thing on wheels. Wagon wagon wagon wagon wagon wagon. Arrgh!

You get the picture ;)

Doesn't this have something to do with the Ultima series?

I don't think they are related. In the Ultima series, the Avatar was the main protagonist, or hero, which was played by you, the player. His title was Avatar because he embodied all of the virtues that were so sacred to the people of Britannia.

I feel like a nerd for knowing so much Ultima lore :-/

I'd never used the word "avatar" in a sentence (spoken or otherwise) until joining the internet world.

Personally I don't know why we don't just use the word icon...
Well, icon would be correct, too...
But "avatar" here goes with the middle definition that Jeratain posted: 2. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept. It's an old word, IIRC (origins in Sanskrit), and unlike "icon" which can be representative of anything, "avatar" is typically a representative of an individual entity, narrowing the definition a bit.

You're lucky. It took me 2 months on the CFC forum to understand what does it mean. And since my english is limited i thought it was just another word that i didn't know.

Icon makes me think at the regular avatars. But the custom avatars are a lot more than icons.

Me too :)

How sad that the series reached it's evolutionary peak with Part V and became crappier and crappier with each new installation. :(

You forgot the numerological value = 1 + 22 + 1 + (2 + 0) + 1 + (1 + 8) = 3 + 6 = 9.

9 is the number of compassion and philanthropy.
