Does anyone know a decent free downloadable AVI player. Media Player won't work and I've tried Crystal but for some reason it can't decompress the audio so all I get is picture. Any help would be appreciated.

I was thinking about doing that before hand, but I was hoping that a smaller file would do the trick due to my pathetic internet connection. I'll let you know if it works.

Forgive my idiocy, but what exactly does an AVI player do? Can it play, say, VCDs? MPEG-1s etc?

AVI is a type of video file; as are MPEG, DiVX, etc. An AVI player is nothing special, it's just a video player that has the capibility of reading and playing AVI files. Take for instance Windows Media Player. With the proper Codecs installed, it can play any of the above formats with no problems. So can Quick Time, DiVX Player, Real ONE Player, and so on.

If you don't know, a Codec is basically a few sets of files that makes your video player capable of reading different file formats, and it gives it settings on how to read those files (for performance and whatnot.)

It seems to have worked thanks a lot.

However a new player would be nice. The one I've got, Crystal, is pretty good but it throws up a Please Buy message every couple of minutes and it is quite annoying. Media Player basically sucks, so I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a free downloadable media player.

search Google with "Koala movie player"...

Or download IrfanView with all plugins and you are able to view and listen to all graphic, movie and music files. I've used it for years and I think it's a brilliant piece of freeware. :)

Wolf, what version of Media Player do you have? Version 9 is great for all my music and video needs. I used to use Winamp for my music, but then I switched to WMP once they upgraded to version 9 and I never looked back. However if you're not satisfied then you can try plenty of different programs. There's the DiVX Pro player, Real ONE Jukebox and video player, Quicktime, and those are just the mainstream ones. You can find plenty of players by searching the net or going to www.download.com
