I know that there are threads on this game, but I didn't see a poll. If there is, then I apoligize.

If by original, you mean the board game, I would agree.

It was fun, kind of like risk with better units.

Total fantasy as a wargame, but I can remember a lot of games of this in the ol days, where endless fun was had laughing at someone's surefire attack go bad with rotten dicerolls, the valiant infantry that survived three attacking tanks, ect.

A good game to play with a group of dudes looking for some beer and pretzels fun.

Strictly a beer and pretzels game, but a halfway decent one.

After playing too many other GOOD wargames though, I just couldn't stomach the die rolls.

I'd play A&A over Risk ANYDAY though.

Yes, AoA, I meant the board game. I didn't put the first computer one up there, because the board game doesn't crash. I voted for the three board games, because of that reason. Iron Blitz crashed way too much for me. I'm trying to find a good way to combine Europe and Pacific, so I can have a war with a little more detail.

Wow! No one voted for Iron Blitz except me!

You can't beat instantaneous setup or the ability to modify the map almost as you see fit, or not having to have 50 dice on hand, and the ability to play solo games when no one else is interested.

They did a wonderful recreation of the board game, and it's really easy to see what's going on. Now if only they would spend a few minutes to fix the dang bugs....

I liked the additions to A&A:E, and the addition of convoys. I found a way for Germany to win. It involves NOT attacking Russia on the first turn, strange as that may sound. You have to get your forces up to the front lines and attack en masse. You have to control the Middle East too. Focus on that and killing the Russians and delaying the other two allies and you can't lose without crummy die-rolls.

Attack Russia first turn, or attack UK or US first turn, and you lose. Africa and Med is a different story, of course.

The full A&A was much more balanced than this one, so while I liked the idea of A&A:E, I think it fails to last. The game isn't up in the air. A&A has got SO MUCH balance built into it. Every strategy has a counter-strategy.

I haven't played A&A:P yet, and now I don't even have a gaming group any more! Anyone live near Chicago and have this game?

Original. I must have played that game hundreds of times. Damn, I had some good die rolls. :D

 You did NOT have good die rolls, you had MAJOR miracles when you rolled the dice!

Just a little advice! Do not ever play the boardgame version of A & A with the DoM. If he gets 18 inf together, he will knock off the entire world!!

I’ve only played the first three (like ‘em all) haven’t seen Iron Blitz yet. Europe & Pacific are really two player games in my opinion -- am playing them more often now due to the difficulty of getting enough like minded folks together. Sometimes play them side by side with the same opponent -- that way it is always “your move”.

I am guilty of the all-nighter A&A on many occasions, that was a fun boardgame. :D

I have Iron Blitz, and my favorite scenario is the post-war Nato vs. Warsaw Pact. "The war is over, and the Bear of the East demands tribute for the blood of its children..."

The best part about the computer game is that you can play other people around the world. I recently got Iron Blitz and found that it is horendously slow on my computer. The PBEM games over Dicey are fun though.

I've tried all of them, but the other two boardgames came "too late" for me to enjoy them properly.

True story: an army friend of mine requested an Axis and Allies bachelor party. I drank jagermeister as Germany, he drank gin as england, japan was saki, Russia vodka, and the American player, our AA pal, drank cola. We played that you could influence industrial rolls by taking shots. I got industrial production but puked all over.

I like Iron Blitz but wish the map was more moddable. I play sometimes on the internet with my brother but laggyness and crashes are a problem, as is forgetting to assign sub damage to a sea unit when the only other choice is planes and having the game get stuck. If anybody from these forums would like to get a game up some time, that would be fun...

I prefer the AAE and AAP. There are more units and more combat.

I also like the destroyers and artillery lacking in AA.

Iron Blitz is THE definitive version. The customization aspect rules.

I never have any friends to play A&A with me... :-( so the game is gathering dust in my closet.

Personnally my favorite is AAPacific.

A&A: Depending on variants/bids etc it is very vulnerable to being decided in the 1st round by the dice. More than anything is perhaps that I really dislike that Japan and USA rarely clash in the Pacific and that Japan and Russia immediately come to blows.

The best of all of them easily if you are playing with friends, 1 vs 1 can't compete with 4 friends, pizza and ALOT of time (remembers first year at University fondly.)

AAEurope: Hehe, the stack of doom and sheer overplay limits my enjoyment of this one. But although people will say that the stack is boring, bidding and the multitude of small battles that will determine the composition. Also there is usually always a chance of around 20 percent that it can swing unexpectedly to the opposition.

AAPacific: I've had alot of fun with this one and have seen both sides be able to turn it around after initially appalling dice (have won as Japan even after losing Pearl Harbour and having the US fleet at Hawaii lose 1 or even no battleships!). I enjoy it because I find it is the most difficult of the games to master...

See my sig for where I recommend you play AAPacific...the other PBEM club, well, I WAS "Rules Director" but now I'm moving to DOI if that says anything :crazyeye:

I liked the original, but in this gaming store in Boston I found a supplemental rulebook that expanded the role of subs, destroyers, and capital ships. Plus it gave some countries special advantages (e.g. German Wolfpacks, Russian infantry was cheaper). Made a lot of sense, and was fun.
