Any fans of this board game on here? Where did you guys purchase your game and how often do you play it? I'm trying to secure a large table so I can set the board up on there in my game room. The Global edition of Axis & Allies is HUGE! It's about 4X8 fully laid out. You can have up to 10 players each running a different power during World War II.

I'd love to play it, but the problem is finding others to play with.

I love A&A. I mostly play with my brothers during the Holidays, but we strictly play the classic board game. We tried the new one (or at least, whatever we found in the store in 2006, the one that has artillery) and we didn't like it; they messed with the map too much and I think they did so to try and balance out the usual Karelia battle on the eastern front of Europe. But I feel like with Russia restricted and/or a bidding system, you can have a pretty fair game, and that part of the game is one of the best parts IMHO; it can decide the game one way or another.

Now we use Triple A, which is awesome and does not require the board game set up/clean up, and is actually pretty good as far as random dice roll. It's way better than the official A&A computer game which was buggy and sucked, and if you like the new A&A rules/board, it has all of that. There is a healthy community that makes maps/rules variants for it and it has an online component, although I have never tried it.

There was an MSN A&A group a while back that I dabbled in, but that didn't last long.

Haven't ever played the full game outside of a 2000-era computer game, but Axis and Allies: Europe is pretty awesome. Setup takes half an hour, minimum, though, and a full playthrough will take all day or more than one day. Madness.

it's really fun, but it takes forever just to set up... After 3 or 4 turns it's also always visable how is going to win the war.

This board game looks like a lot of fun. I had the computer game a few years ago and it was awful - imagine landing at Normandy and having to raise and train an army on the spot!

Axis & Allies is all right, but I really like World In Flames. WiF takes several hours to set up... but it's worth it.

illram, any interest in Triple A by email with a newbie?

Wow. The global edition is awesome.

I got completely hooked on A&A when Hasbro brought out a computer version about 14 years ago. While the UI was hopelessly backward and buggy as Illram pointed out above, it allowed A&A fanatics world-wide to play together. A number of clubs were formed to rank players based on their records. At least one of them still exists, and many of the players were those I competed against back then:

They are still apparently using the Hasbro engine. I am downloading it now to check it out.

I've played the miniatures version of the game, but I can't find a group willing to put in the time to play the regular board game. I can't find a reliable group to play Friedrich and Maria as-is, and those are significantly simpler and require less setup/cleanup than A&A.

There are various places in the US where people congregate to play A&A. Post your location or send me a PM, and I'll see if I can track one down for you.

I still have the original board game. I think I was around 13 or 14 years old when some of my friends got me hooked on it. It could take us an entire weekend to finish a game. That was a looong time ago.

About 10 years ago, I pulled it out at a family get-together & my brother-in-law got hooked on it & borrowed it from me. A month later he returned it under orders from his wife. Probably the best board game I've ever played.

I figured somebody would create a computer version, but I didn't know there were board versions with different maps & rules now.

In Australia you can get them from Mind Games stores.

I used to play with some guys from work (a previous job) and we used to setup on the boardroom table.

Haven't played for a few years now.

There is a Steam Group for TripleA if anyone is interested. Should make coordinating matches easier.

I have the original game as well. It's seen a lot of play time over the years. Games can take an entire day or weekend like you say, but my friends and myself actually prefer that.

Yeah the new Global version really does the game justice. The only issue is finding them to buy since you need the Europe and Asia campaign to combine them together. They are also between $70-90 each. The quality looks great though and it will make for years of game play so its a worthy investment, especially if you have a dedicated group of friends to play with. Maybe each pitch in $20 and split the costs.
