I decided to try out the Babylonians to see what their special unit was like in the early stages of the game. The rules state ADM of 2.1.2, but the games uses 2.2.1.

Does anyone know when this changed, or how to reset to 2.1.2?

I think that it might've just been an error in the rule book... or changed before the final version of the game was put out. either way, theres really no way to reset it to 2.1.2 as of right now, until the editor comes out, at least. then you can change it, although it's still ok as 2.2.1.

You're going to find a lot more that's wrong in the manual. Search for information in the civilopedia, w/ the 1.21g patch everything will be current.

Oh, and welcome jongleur!:)

There was some (very limited) discussion in this thread about using a hex editor to make certain changes to the civ3mod.bic. If you want, and simply can't wait for the real editor, you could try this way.

Probably, the rules are stuffed up, but then what would the benifit be? Otherwise it is just an archer that can trigger the the Babylonian Golden Age. I'll wait for the editor, and then try.

It's an archer with superior defense. In fact, the Bowman defends as well as Spearmen do. This is quite useful in many circumstances. It's not one of the very best UU's, no (watch your Bowmen be slaughtered by the fury of my Immortals!!!) but it is useful. Certainly better than the Man-o-War or the F-15, which provide no significant benefit.

What is the "golden age" and what does it do? I keep seeing it come up but didn't see any reference to it in the manual. Thanks, Heike.

Golden ages are triggered when either your civ's unique unit wins combat, or when you build wonders with both of your civs traits. Take Egypt, for example. Industrious and Religious. If they built the Pyramids, which is an industrious and religious wonder, they get a golden age. Or, if they built the sistine chapel (religious, right?) and hoover dam (industrious), they would get a golden age.

You can only have 1 golden age per game, and it lasts 20 turns. During that time, each space produces 1 extra shield, food, and commerce (something like that, i believe).

Yes, I agree, that in hindsight the defense of 2 is quite an advantage, but the rule book spouted on about the advantages of a movement of 2, which also allows retreat in combat, or even a step back to avoid combat, and draw the opposing unit into a more favourable killing zone.

I'll keep my eyes out for the senario editor, and try it out then. In the meantime, time to try the Persian Immotrals.

regards,

Michael.

If you're interested in powerful UUs, some you might want to try are:

Persian Immortal (already mentioned)
Iroquois Mounted Warrior
German Panzer

The Japanese Samurai would be on the list if it was 5/3/2 like in the manual - it is actually 4/4/2. The other 12 have varying usefulness, but these three are the ones that are most often cited as being game-winning units.

Those Immortals are KILLERS. I wasn't expecting them and/or didn't understand what they were. Ol' Hammy declared war on me and I wasn't too worried because I had lots of knights and he only had what appeared to be spearmen and swordsmen. I was destroyed!!

Those Immortals are only killers if they attack you. If you wanna get rid of them, pick them off with horsemen, swordsmen, or archers.
