Okej, i'm new here as you can see and in the few days i've been strolling around here i have learned so much!
I used to play Civ2 on my MAC is mostly sticked with 1 city and NEVER built mines.
I just picked techs without thinking etc.
Now i built lots of cities i select technologies with a goal. and I just play much better.
Anyways, I just would like to share with your a "tale" about a game i just had (2nd game after i read the forums)
I started as Chinese, getting Alphabet and Pottery (woohoow).
I decided i would go straight for Philosophy, then Invention (=> Gunpowder) to have a nice tech lead and then go full for industrial.
I started very simple grabbing all huts on my island (quite small, yet large enough) and getting some good techs and 2 Chariots. Explored entire island and had some great Resources, some well placed cities gave me lots of dual specials.
Got Philosophy around 2000BC, took the oppertunity to het Chivalry.
Then indians landed on my island, I allied them.
Then i noticed a Indian city on my island, broke alliance and killed the city, in the mean time i reached invention (Yay!), and i was way in front of everyone else. Some turns later i had Gunpowder.
Shipped over some muskets to Indian land and took over all his cities. Met Greeks and declared war...
I then Went straight for industrial, wich (after some research) i reached around 400 B.C.
Then i decided it was enough as a first test and resigned.

P.S. This was Chieftain, so nothing special, but a rook has to start somewhere.
P.S. I once modded some game files (5 step roads, later aqueduct,...)
Now can anybody tell me the ORIGINAL values of the following...
- When do you need Aqueduct for further growth ?
- When do you need Sewer System for further growth ?
- What is the range of paratroopers ? (to paradrop)

Thats about it i think.
I'm going to go up the skill levels. but i'd love to but Civ 3 too, but that will have to wait about another month.

cheers

They are 8, 12, and 10 respectively.

Sounds good. Keep up the practicing, and maybe one day you might be as good as guys like Andu or starlifter ;)

Thank you very much !
I will keep practicing, i'm starting a new game now on Warlord (big step up for me, knwoing i always played with cheats (30000 gold) and always on Chieftain.
Wish me luck.
I'll surely post updates of my game here and tell how its going/went.

cheers

haha, as i said i started on Warlord now.
I went for my same Fast Philo => Gunpowder tactic.
Worked like a charm again.
Around 1500 BC met Japanese and i'm attacking those now. I'm up in tech with around 5 techs. Haven't real gonna for anything tech wise now. Mainly focusing on war now. I do notice Warlord is a step up (i get riots now [although i set ini to the right settings so that might be a reason too]).
I have 7 cities all going good (imho). So when i progress (which will be tomorrow 22.30 pm here) i'll post for sure. Sorry i can't give you any screens, i'm playing Civ 2 on my old macintosh (500mb HDD, go figure) and i'm on inet on "new" PC.

cheers

P.S. Is there like a good opening strat tech wise?

An opening strategy I know that people use is to go straight for Monarchy. That way they can quickly use all squares to their full potential and have a lower corruption, meaning more resources, which makes you stronger. Other than that I don't know much.

PS: Where are you living? It's currently 22:42 where I live. I have a feeling we are in the same time zone...

Before making any other changes to your rules.txt files, make a copy (i.e., rules.sav) of the file in its original state so you can always revert back to the default rules when needed.

@ Person, I need Monarchy anyway for Philo, so i get that and changee to Monarchy immediatly
@ specialist: Thanks a lot, seems like i ain't doing to bad after checking out that post
@ Tim: bit late for that now, i changed rules like 5 years ago :p, but they are set to normal now.

Keep it up FuRRie!!

I am a new member of this forum, but I have played Civ2 for a LONG time!!

It is good to see that this game is standing the "Test of Time" ;) and that so many new people are still playing it and enjoying it!!! :)

@ Alsbron, i've been playing Civ2 for a long time aswell, just had a long period of not playing it.
Now that i play decent and without cheating i'm enjoying the game much more. And with the switching to higher difficulties its getting much more intresting.
I am waiting for my new pc to het myself Civ3 but i will keep playing Civ2 for sure.

Actually you don't. Monarchy is not a prerequisite for any other tech. If your real first priority is Philosophy, you are just a close to an early republic along the way (1 tech off Philo. path) as you are to Monarchy.

However, unless you go for an early republic, you should get monarchy after Alp, Cer, CoL.

Indeed, i don't need Monarchy, i just always seem to get it on the way :x
Always seem to stick to monarchy too :s

At least, none that are on the Philosophy path. Monarchy is required for Feudalism, which is required for Theology and the "four-legged" path to Tactics, Mobile Warfare and Computers. If you go Early Republic see if you can trade for Feudalism at some point so you skip the carrying costs of Monarchy and Warrior Code. Only a few times have I been able to trade for Chivalry and skip Horse as well. It also depends on how early you make contact with the other AI civs and what techs you gift them to make them change their research.

I tend to go Republic nowadays instead of Monarchy, don't really know why, just works better for me.
I have civ2 on PC now so i can play much quicker. I now win good on Warlord, maybe i'll go Prince some time soon.

Welcome on board FuRRie.

I see my cocivers have given you loads of great advice.

*BUT*

Have you tried OCC (OneCityChallenge)

This is what it sounds. You play with the one selfimposed constraint of not building more than *ONE* city. Then you try to win by space ship.

If you havent I can advice you its great fun, the game not only runs much faster (when you can devote all your attention to a single city), it also requires a different approach to play. The value of techs and especially wonders become quite different in an OCC.

D'oh! :shakehead I'm really starting to lose my edge on this game. For some reason I thought Monarchy was a dead-end tech. I looked it up, but missed the arrow on Nethog's diagram (It sneaks out the bottom, going below Math). I am almost always trying to avoid Feudalism for as long as possible and then trade for it when I need it, so I forgot about that. I haven't done many Early Conquest games with STWA lately, so Feudalism is the last thing I want.

Feudalism kills the Warrior, which is why I get very nervous about huts after being forced to take Warrior Code. I'll rush for Invention just to stop huts from producing techs.
