Bad Starting Positions

Well, as you can probably tell right from the onset, I'm the new guy out on the boards, so hello all! Don't kill me :) . No, just kidding, I've been really impressed with all of the posts around here. They've helped immensely with solidifying my Monarch-level strategies, and have even allowed me to toy a little bit with Emperor. I've been meaning to join the boards for some time, but I guess I never got that time until now (too much playing, too little talking...).

Anyway, I won't tire you with anymore of that. I was wondering what some of you thought about bad starting positions. Once in awhile, I get poor positions to begin with, but playing the Ottomans in my current Monarch game, my start point was terrible! A tiny island with mostly tundra and mountains (kinda ironic, since I expressedly clicked the "Pangea" option on the setup screen) was the opening grace I found myself mucking about in, with no rivers, no fresh water, no iron or even horses. I squeezed in six cities with severe overlapping problems, and was even more distraught to see that no nearby land mass was in sight for the 3-tile limit galleys. I tried to get the Great Lighthouse, but was beaten to it and had to instead settle for the Colossus (grr).

I wound up rushing some barracks and building up a nice horde of spearmen, archers, and catapults. I managed to get some galleys across the narrowest straight I could find without sinking, allowing me to load up galleys, send them halfway across, transfer the units to the other set of galleys, and safely bring them to the coast. Though the AI was already edging into the Medieval Age while I struggled in the middle Ancient, I managed to take a coastal town of the Carthaginians, my weakest neighbor. We're evenly matched, but I'm struggling to keep the war momentum up since my convoy of spearmen was ambushed at sea and regrettably lost.

I'll try to post a savegame when I get a chance, but my question after all of that is how do you all handle those sticky openings? Early war seems the best (maybe only?) option, but what would you do if that gambit fails and you find yourself defeated with the same crummy position you started off with? I might be able to pull this Carthaginian-Ottoman War through, but it's hard to say.

I'd be interested in any of the tales you folk might have. In any case, thanks for helping me out.

Hi Uncle D, and welcome.
No specific stories to tell - although I recognize that island you started on, been there before, lol.
When I'm in the mood for it, fighting the good fight from a bad start can be a lot of fun. Other times, I really don't want to mess with it.
And I'm convinced that the map generator just loves to put the human player on the small island when you set it on Pangea. It definitely has its "Irony" flag turned on.

I dont know what it is with the map generator, but i really think it hates the human players. I swear that 9 out of 10 times i completly get shafted when it comes to where i start compared to the a.i.. Yes maybe my first city will have fairly decent land, but around me are nothing but desert, tundra, and mountains! EVERYTIME! Now, im not one to give up easily, but when the other players start out in flat shielded grassland for as far as the eye can see it has definite setbacks as far as trying to keep up with them productivity wise and research wise. As far as editing my own map to play on i simply will not, whats the fun in that!

As far as I can tell it seems to have no preference as to who is where - it just seems to be totally random.

My Ottoman game ATM I have a reasonable sized portion of a main island in a 'large island archipelago' style large map. Some Jungle was present but the main problem is the lack of resources. I have one Ivory and three Dyes for luxury. No horses (typical - Ottomans UU depends on it) and only one Saltpeter with three Iron resources.

Middle of the road start though the lack of Horses is a major setback which will require a war with someone to get hold of some.

That said, the Babylonians have a vast area of land to colonise and have the largest land area by far yet a good 60% of it is Tundra and they have no Iron at all :)

The Carthaginians have a really small island (with 7 Gems resources  )they are stuck on so they are out of it and everyone else is similarly placed to me. The Zulu's are declaring war on everyone as usual but Germany kicked their ass in the last war so everyone is about on an even keel.

Pity the Ottomans in my last game though - starting on an island totally covered in Jungle with no free squares anywhere - unlucky or what? No strat resources of any kind at all and only some silks as luxuries!

I've seemed to have bad luck with start locations as well, but it's nothing that can't be overcome. Every terrain has some sort of advantage. Uncle D, the advantage of your start position is that you have a small base of cities that will be very inconvenient to invade for most of the game. Since you're in an island, you can take advantage of the coastal and sea squares to get large amounts of food and commerce. One could adopt an ICS building strategy (Build cities everywhere) and use the good food/commerce output of the water to rush culture buildings. Get that foothold on the other continent and build cities as densely as you can, rushing culture buildings and enough military to keep your territory growing. Build your FP over here, too. You should wind up with tons of tiny cities producing at least 10 culture per turn. If you do the math, culture victory is just a matter of time. Even if your foothold is invaded, you still have a culture farm on your original island. While everyone on the mainland is constantly fighting over land, you can quietly win the game with only a small empire on bad land.

Thanks for the tip, patmcq. I never really thought about a culture victory, but I'll definitely give a try. I've managed to beat to blast a mediocre foothold on the mainland, hoping that my few elites will grab a Great Leader for the Forbidden Palace. If I expand a little more, a culture win will probably be the way to go.

I haven't downloaded the new patch yet, but I know that, according to Firaxis, the Pangea map generation has been "improved." Anyone with the patch know how, exactly? Maybe my lonely days on desert (or mountain or tundra) islands will be over... lol
