So far I've split your basic army into a few parts: pillage units, escort/defense units, artillery units, and offensive units

My first army consisted of 1 spearmaan per city, 1 spearman defending every 2 catapalts to act as an escort (I had 3 of these stacks), 2 chariot pillagers, and as many offensive units put in armies (by my second war I had gotten herioc epic :) )

What's your idea of a balanced army?

(btw, I gotta thank all you guys for the tips I'm able to beat regent now :goodjob: )

My idea of a balanced army is about 50 ICBM's and a whole lot of Modern Armor. Who needs artillery when you have nukes?;)

i just try and keep lots of spearmen around ( cause they upgrade all the way to mech infantry). Then i try and build alot of fast units, and a few more powerful slower units to help defend border cities. Artillery is really only usefull in mountain/hill/ forest terrain. I use the blitz tatic most of the time. Hit em hard and fast with quick moving units, and i use bombers late in the game because there range is much further then artillery and i don't have to leave the safety of the city till i pounded my target city into oblivion ( this tatic works great for democracy btw )

I'm dissapointed...My tactic is defensive unit for every city, 2 artillery stacks w onr ezscort unit, and many offensive units all in armies (I loooove herioc epic). Those catapalts help much more than you think.

Love those explosions. :p

And that is precisely why I turned the Manhattan Project into a commerce-producing Internet Wonder.

fephisto: With 1 movement per turn they are only usefully for defensive tatics imo. I keep a stack of artillery around once i get rails to defend my coastlines as i usually have very large ones.

8 artillery, 8 mech, 8 armor, 3 transport, 6 battleship per ops...
no carriers (i don't believe in them anymore! )

1 defensive unit in each city

2 defensive units in cities bordering not so friendly neighbors

All the rest of my army is offensive units horseman/tanks

Also If water trasnport is important lot's of ships

And when nukes come around lot's of ICMS and Tactical Nukes

While I like artillery and have used it extensively in the past, I don't use it all that frequently any more. Without enabling the death by bombardment option, it's pain to have to move em around then protect them while their turn is up.
I'd first recommend limiting the number of stacks. It doesn't make sense to have roving band of 5 units roaming, unless you intend on just being at war and pillaging everything in sight.
I use 2-3 defensive per stack depending on how many offensive I have in there + LOTS of fast movers.
They can scout, pillage, attack & retreat, they just aren't that great at taking out fortified units until cavalry.
