Currently, in the Advanced Setup section, there is a checkbox for “Raging Barbarians.” Otherwise, the only option is for the normal amount. I’d very much like to see, with the rest of the map options, a dropdown box for Barbarians with 5 options:

None*
Sparse
Normal
Raging
Random

*I don’t know if I personally would ever play a game with no Barbarians at all, but people should at least be given the opportunity if they want it.

I play with no Barbarians, always (and there is an option for that btw), they're just pain in the butt most of the time, maybe if I'll play as Celts Im ight turn them on so I can get some use of Pictish Warrior, other than that, I always turn it off, well, maybe when I play Hotseat I tend to turn on Raging Barbarians for some reason xD.

I used to play with no Barbarians as well, but then I was never inclined to adopt Honor polices. Later when I moved to King difficult, I realized that it's good to have something between you and those crazy empires - no that it really matters, but they act like a moral support (and a gold, experience and culture source) when they are not capturing your workers...

I'm ok with the 3 options we have right now (None, Normal and Raging), but a 'Sparse' option could be nice now you mentioned it.

I think if you cuold simply check that they can't enter your borders I'd be fine with that, nothing more annoying than seeing your improvement pillaged, wasting time, having to constantly protecting your workers from getting owned.

I'd have no problem with the option, but wouldn't that make them just more candy like ancient ruins?

I did once make a little mod that lets slightly more camps spawn: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=445606.
The increase is very slight, though. When testing the mod, using different settings, I found that a higher increase of camps made the game way easier.
You know you need to make a few warriors, of course, but the AI is much worse at protecting its workers and settlers. You see barbs running away with them all the time. For a human player it becomes a piece of cake to grab workers and gain City State influence.
