Barbarian trait not working?

For some reason, when I start a game as the Clan, the Barbarian trait has no effect... i.e., Barbarians are at war with me from the start, can't use For The Horde, and so on. I'm playing with More Naval AI, with a few XML changes, though I don't see how those would affect barbarians (changing the Lanun palace and Gambling Houses). Difficulty was Emperor/Immortal, mapscript was various (Terra, Big+Small, Pangaea), Acheron both disabled and turned on.
Is there any reason why the barbarian trait would not work, aside from getting too powerful? (BTW there's no message to that effect; way back when I first tried a barbarian with base FFH the game would announce peace with the Barbarians first thing...)
 
Interestingly enough, if the barbarian trait is applied after the start of the game, it does not give peace with barbarians ... as such things are done with a simple (python?) call at the beginning of turn 0.

However, if you started the game as a barbarian leader, it must be a bug with either the trait itself or the python call related to it. (imho)
 
Hmm. So no barb peace in always war games? Is this a confirmed feature/bug?

(if so, I would suggest Tholal to fix it in Naval AI mod, if he hasn't already)

The bars declare on you when you meet them, its not a bug.
 
I dunno ... I feel like barbs declaring war on you (as barbarian) should be considered a bug regardless of always war or not ... as the option is intended for AI use, not environmental use (barbarians are part of the environment)
