I just started a new game with Mongolia on Monarch and found that China was completely wiped off the map by barbarians. While this isnt too surprising (6 of 10 different games Ive started as Mongolia have seen China fall before my 1st turn), I was surprised to find that Persia, Arabia and Germany have also been conquered by barbs. I havent had a chance to explore the rest of the map, but its not looking good. Im actually hoping that the majority of nations have been destroyed so I can unite all these pagan savages under the Mongolian flag.

Persia, China and Arabia can suffer some pretty heavy damage from barbds, and Germany probably lost a bunch of cities to France and Russia and then collapsed. Don't worry though, they'll be back with Nationalism!

I've never seen any nations gain independance from barbarians, but i haven't played many games where barbarians kill everybody.

I couldnt resist so I opened up the editor and it seems that Rome, Greece and Egypt are also under barbarian rule. France is cornered in and India has dozens of Barbs at its doorstep. After seeing the sheer number of barbs in the world, I think its safe to say that France and India will both fall very soon (me too if I dont get some Keshiks chopped). Russia might be able to hang on with their special ability, but their growth will be stunted. This should be fun.

Maybe we need a way for independence to be triggered under barbarian rule before Nationalism, when the barbarians are too big? It could just be that every 30 turns, if 5 civs have died and if the barbarians have a certain % of all land, each dead civ has a 50% chance of gaining independance in barbarian cities.

That´s what I was thinking! :D

I agree. Let the people revolt from barbairian rule! But the real question is when?

I think they should not stay barbarian for very long. Blas proposal is good, but perhaps I would make it every 20 there should be a 20% chance that a civ might regain the land it lost to barbarians, regardless of the other civs status or barb land percentage. This would be great to represent fragmented periods of civs, like when the chinese were divided. And the civ coming back would represent the unification of the lands :D

That sounds good, Elhoim. Escaping from the thumb of Barbarian rule should not hinge upon Nationalism.

I agree that this sounds like a good idea. The one modification that I would make is that hte resurrected civ should only get its capital back, that way it is forced to reunify on its own.

I like that idea. I think it would be cool to see Gunner's Idea in the game. It shuld only happen from barbarians and the ressuected civ should get a good sized army to help the reunification.

There just isn't such thing as "barbarian rule". When barbarians migrated in masses conquering whole countries, they just settled down there and formed a new country.

I realize this of course. In terms of Civ however, i have seen barbarians control all of asia and the midle east.

yep same here. Needless to say, it's not very funny.
But I have also seen each of my games listing the starting 4 civs as the last 4. I understand that this mod aims at reproposing most of human history, but some things are just not funny. The new civs come in with too much stuff, especially too many techs. New civs should come in with maybe all techs researched by others, but not more.
But I digress...

Everybody, remember what "barbarians" here represent. They merely represent all of the world's "minor" nations, or in other words, everybody in the world who is not in the game. So a barbarian takeover should represent times when the civ's culture took the back seat to a foreign culture or a minority culture.

Blasphemous that would be fine if you could talk with them. In my eyes barbarians in Civ4 are just annoying aliens.

Fact is that in this mod, they represent all of humanity except for the 18 civilizations. It's unrealistic, but it's a layer of simplification that the game requires in order to work.

And that's why something needs to be done. In a normal civ game they play a relatively small part but with the dynamic rise and fall the barbarians can become a very big force. When barbarians take over most of the ancient world it takes years for them too be cleared. Hopefully the addition of the minor civs will sort any more little problems with the barbarian "empires".

With Warlords, besides the addition of major and minor civs in conquests, a special slot will be reserved for "Indipendent". Civs that collapse won't turn barbarian but a minor, peaceful civ called "Indipendent"
