hi,

i made this x and y connectable axis earth map, based off a not so standard projection:

x_y_earth_101x91_minimap.gif

it's 101 by 91 tiles. europe got stretched, while the rest of the world got shrunk. i think 18 civs could fit well, at least theres good room in europe.

normal north/south directions just don't make any sense here :crazyeye:

i haven't gotten around to adding resources, civ placements or goody huts, although the height, terrain, features and rivers are done, which are all included in the attached zip file (it contains the bitmaps)

Interesting choice of projection. Looking forward to seeing it with resources and all. :)

Nice work, I know this took some time to develope. I found making rivers not as hard as it looks. My project has undergone numerous changes and alterations. So I can appreciate the ammount of work it takes to develope something like this. :goodjob:

thanks. i nearly gave up on this map (i didn't like how euro-asia turned out at all), until today i figured i might as well do the resources and civ placements. all in all, it's really not that hard IMO. basically, with a base map, I'll just crop it, recolor it, then work pixel by pixel. so is it really hard work? i don't think so. maybe because i always liked geography

the longest part, i think, is placing resources the right way. who wants to google for hours figuring out where whales can be found in the worlds oceans?

as for making a map completely from scratch.. that's a whole different story

:goodjob: Man, this map is perfect. It`s astounding. It`s great to have some playing space on the european pennisula. But it`s still too small. Could you make it bigger? 2 og 3 times bigger?

Wow. Great idea + work. Couldn't you just place ressources based on their placement in the shipped-in version of Earth(huge map)?? would be relativly easy me-hopes...

That would be ideal but unfortunately, most PC's would crash when the map is loaded. I can easily load a 120 * 80 Map in about 1 minute if it is a new game. However, later on during the game my turns take 5 min or more to run the turn sequence and I have a really fast PC.

Maybe sometime down the road when people have a 5 Ghz with a 1 GB Video Card and 10 GB of RAM then things will be much smoother. :p

Wow, I haven`t even started playing Civ4, so I don`t have much experience about this. Is it really so resource-consuming? The total land area doesn`t look this large on this map. Perhaps I`ll tweak it a little...

I bought my own happiness simulation tool allright.. a x1900xt. It doesn`t have 1gb of ram. But it DOES have 48 pixel shaders :scan:
