Barracks and promotions...

No because either way it is a 'level 4' unit
So if you have CD 1 with enough experience you could either
1. add another City Defender to make a 'Royal Guard'
2. add a City Raider to make an Urban Warfare specialist
Or
3. add something else

In any case adding one shouldn't hurt the rest

That makes sense, but in the pre-release info. they only list CD levels 1-3, so i wonder how many levels each unit is allowed per promotion type? I would hope they give the unit a lot of options!

I would assume that you may combine any kind promotion with all others (as long as it fits to your kind of unit, of course).
Why not have a unit being specialised on forest and desert warfare, as long as you've had enough xp's for promoting?
And why not having City Defense as well as City Raid as promotions? As Krikkitione indicated, this would just be a logical addition.

I hope you guys are right, I really like the idea of unit promotions and now that they have changed unit strengths for different situations basically giving units attack bonus, for example pikeman arent as good at deffending cities, but are great against horseman. This type of combat combined with unit promotions should bring a lot of new and welcomed Strategy to warfare!

I had hoped that you would be able to custom build units using barracks. Say for example I wanted to turn an “infantry” unit into a “special forces” type of unit then I would select the promotions suitable for such a mutation, and the game would determine how much it would cost and how long it would take. That way I wouldn’t have to go to war against all and sundry in order to get a specialist unit. I would just like to be able to play a game without having to enter into major wars all the time and I had hoped that I would be able to build customised units that my neighbours would see and say “Whoa, let's leave the hornets next alone.”

I believe that’s why the dev. introduced wild animals early on in the game, and it sounds like barbarians will have more then just a hut this time, something like a low-grade city without any culture of course. So I’m thinking you will be able to gain a lot exp. Points without having to fight a civilization, but I don’t think you would be able to gain enough to make whatever you want, for that you will still have to fight a real Civ. but it’s a nice start!

I think a Barracks might also give you some experience over time in the absence of conflict. So you might get 1 exp every turn (or 10 turns depending on how hard they are to get) that a unit is in a city with a barracks. So that eventually you will be able to get that 'special forces unit'.

Actually what would be Really good is if experience [that hadn't been spent on promotions] could be somehow transferred among units (so if you have 10 units with 5 exp you could get 1 with 50... so you make your 'special forces unit' by getting the best of the best from your whole army...or you take a unit that has been in a lot of combat use the best of the best from that unit to 'train' other units.
1. It could only be between units of the (exact) same type spearman<->spearman not spearman<->pikeman
2. A unit could only give up and/or receive 1 (or some fixed #) of Experience per turn

For easy transfer those could be the two things a unit could do, you could tell it to 'train', which means any 'extra' turn it and some other unit with less exp were in the same (spot/city) it would give experience to the lesser unit/
You could also set a unit to 'elite' meaning it would actively take experience from any unit not also set to 'elite' under the same circumstances (to help make that special forces unit)

I think I read in some pre-release article that the barracks gives a new unit that is just built experience points. I don't know for sure but I think this is what the barracks does.
