Hello Fellow Civ Die Hards,

Like many, I have been playing Civ since 1993-4 with Civ I and is the only game I play. With Civ V working via Steam...(I have the PC DVD Rom version already installed and works) I have a few questions which might seem just blaintently obvious to just know but I did not realize that you needed the game to work via Steam etc. So here I go and would love some feedback from those that know. Hopefully this thread will help others who love the game and have little time from our daily jobs and families to know all the details about everything. Playing Civ 4 is a luxury for me on the weekends for a few hours and after installing Civ 5 ... I went on vacation and just got back and with work and family don't have anytime to read hundreds of threads to get updated on what's going on.

1: On Civ 4 BTS one of the options you had was "Check For Updates"...that is patches. Civ 5 does not currently have that option so will Steam just automatically update the game or next time I upload and boot the game up a window will open saying Steam has a new patch and will download and install it for you?

2: I was at Walmart and picked up the Brady's Games Civ 5 guide. I don't ever buy this guide but since the game did not come with a manuel and info I thought I should pick it up and get all the info I can. Yes...I DL the PDF manual from the website and have it on my desktop. Are two the same? or does the Brady's version designed to help you understand the game much better?

3: I was on a plane recently for our vacation and you need to pay for internet service on the flight o.k. if you want to. With Civ 5 working via Steam....do you need internet access in order to play the game or not. At home of course no problem but with no internet on the plane or in a car etc. when the Steam window pops up with username and password it will connect to the internet to check security etc. If you don't have it then you can't play Civ 5. Is this correct or not?

For now those seem to be the basic questions. I kept reading threads about Steam for the past few months etc. but thought nothing of it because I thought that it only applies if you buy the game via Steam to DL rather than in the store...hard copy on dvd. When I installed the game windows popped up and I had to create an account with Steam. Then I quickly realized .... this is what everyone is talking about.

Thanks

Positive or Negative feedback is welcome. Hope this thread helps others in my boat which loves Civ 1-4 and now 5.

1. Steam will automatically install the updates without notifying you. You can turn this off, and then updates will not install.

2. The Brady guide is different from the manual, but is out of date. As updates are released, the guide gives you more wrong information. The best place for up to date info and strategies is here at CFC.

3. The first time you play the game, you need to connect to the internet to validate the game. After that, you can put it in offline mode. Then you can play without an internet connection. IIRC, you can still play without internet without clicking this option, but the MP, Mod browser, etc will not work.

Hello Fellow Die Hards,

A Fourth question with Civ V: The option of Downloading Mods ...states DL at your own risk. We have DL mods from this website and no harm has been done .... is this different? and which Mods are currently availible at the moment to even DL the game just came out?

Thanks

The guide has some decent info on strategies for playing each Civ, but a lot of the technical details are wrong, like some of the maintenance costs and a good number of the social policies. I have a feeling the guide was printed during beta and never updated.

It's not really worth the money, IMO.
