Battle Sound Effects

Hi all. I've only had Civ3 for a short time, but something strikes me as a bit odd in the sound effects- there's no actual battle sounds. I get the all the sounds of before and after - the noises of leather and wood and metal.. ships sinking (creak/spadoosh!), men falling down (aaargh!), even the bang of an artillery shell landing... but that's it. I can see the discharge (smoke etc)and recoil of rifles and cannon but can't hear them - same with swords, ships fighting and what not.
Have I got a duff version of the game, or is this the way it's suppsed to be???????

Some of the mods out there have weird battle sounds, but the regular epic game should have them all. I'd try reinstalling, and do a 'full' install. That should load the sounds into the hard drive.

And I did give it a shot... but it didn't work. Still can't hear anything during combat!
I'll see if anyone on the Mac forum has experienced anything like this... or maybe even try Aspyr.
