BBC Civ 5 Video Preview (new in-game footage)

Nice.
Main new thing IMO; the possibility of surrender. Very interesting, since supposedly vassals are gone, and puppet states are something different.

I wonder what this will mean?

Hey...that BBC reporter knew his stuff! You don't think he...na, surely not...just well briefed.

Some nice gameplay clips that I'd love to see in HD.
- Land bombardment
- Ships sunk by bombardment
hmmm...what was the other thing? Oh yeah...
- A nuclear explosion!

At one point into the video the Aztecs are apparently 'surrendering' following a nuclear strike.

What do you mean by 'Surender' ? (I cannot listen to the vid here...)
Shirk says "they'll surrender now" after he nukes the enemy.

Diplomacy statement from Elizabeth "we will never surrender". [Which could just be flavor.]

Surrender will probably just be like it was in Vanilla Civ IV. The loser offers up some gold or resources for peace.

I thought it was confirmed that units don't necessarily die when they're attacked? In all of the videos I've seen, the losing unit always dies.

Thats not really surrender to me. That's just a peace treaty. Surrender seems to imply something more along the lines of Civ4 capitulation.

They don't.

Deaths have cooler graphics, so this is what they show.

Yeah it's a shame about the quality of the video.

You never know he may have played Civ in his youth. It's a pretty good indication that he plays games if he was sent to e3 - the BBC tend to send reporters that know their stuff.

As for the 'surrender' comment. Possibly he just meant that Montemazu (spelling?) will now accept a cease fire or something along those lines rather than a new dynamic?

The quality of the video is not very good. A pity, that they focus so much on war and fighting in the demos instead of explaining the not-so-bombastic but more interesting dynamics of gameplay like culture, social policies, tech progression, AI functioning. These are what determines the longterm playability of a game. Graphics are a nice eyecatcher, but gameplay matters more!

The way I'm reading this is as if people think that anybody who works in the BBC or just lives in Britain has no clue about Civilization. I got the same sense on that forum regarding the "Anti-American" comment on the site.

I don't know where you got United Kingdom from? I think it was more directed at the reporter because he doesn't seem your average gamer type.

Sounds like the reporter had a blind spot in Civilization knowledge

actually at 1:40 that red ship survived the first attack

I'm shocked SHOCKED to see new information coming from bbc of all places. Has gaming finally arrived in mainstream media. Would have expected one of the known gaming sites to be the first to bring this footage. Anyways.

Not too much info, but it's nice to see the interface in action a little more. If only the resolution was better. The worker allocation on the city screen is shown for example, would have loved to see that in more detail.

Aw, poor Monte

So far the game looks very nice and interesting. I wonder what he meant by surrender.
Also, am I the only one who finds it kind of cool that the BBC out of all people makes a preview video about civ5.

 Can't WAIT for this to come out...looks amazing.

The surrendering thing: I'm almost certain it's basically the capitulation mechanics in Civ IV. Monty is admitting he's been beaten by the player.
