Forum dead when I came to pick it up, so...

Dispatches tomorrow.

Update:
Small monster on my hands. Five turns complete. At peace with the world. Hiawatha took the last American city worth having, leaving him on a two tile island. Nothing to gain by attacking Cincinnati but moving troops way out of position. Wall Street built. Improving terrain to build lots of tanks. Did not trade IC for Combustion, took all the Native American's money instead and put it toward research.

Lot of time spent getting 20spt, 30spt, 40spt, 50spt in core cities. Corruption and waste are nominal throughout the empire.

Post tonight.

That stunk having the forums down on our holiday.

That is excellent news about corruption. Communism is becoming one of my favorite governments (In civ life only)

1500
WooHoo. Lots of money, lots of resources, lots of very productive cities
Urban planning notes:
Sirmium and Treveri in the north look to be the industrial powerhouses and should be given the high food and high shield tiles and allowed to gorw. The other towns are good trading posts with a coastal commerce bonus but I would stop their infrastructure growth with banks and not let the population grow past six right now.

Cyrene and Lugdunum are probably at their poulation limits, Agrtippina has a lot of coastal tiles available and will be another good trading town.

Curia is a good spot with food bonuses and hills and mountains. I would make sure Curia keeps all the food bonus terrain.

Won't even get into a discussion of the core towns around Rome or the SE.

Resources: We have oil, Egypt doesn't. We have Rubber, Hiawatha doesn't, Abe has nothing. (which probably explains the sneak attack as I seem to remember he lacked rubber when the donnybrook started)

No immediate military threats on the horizon. Abe has a damaged galleon off the coast of Japan which the Egyptians will sink soon.

Start the music.

An attempt at planting spies fails in all three instances.

Veii finishes its cathedral and starts a stock exchange.

Tokyo finishes its acqueduct

1505
Setting up for an attack on Baltimore. Lots of worker movement, irrigating and mining.

We learn how to build ironclads so shut off research unitl I can figure out what it is worth.

Virconium builds something and set it so that it is uncorrupted 30spt and 37gpt. It does not need a hospital and can give mined mountain tiles to a couple of nearby towns

In a lot of cases you can set up towns to perfect 20-30-40 spt and max uncorrupted gold by using cops. This has the secondary benfit of reducing contentment problems as well.

1510
Antium is a 30spt at pop 14 with one cop. That caps its growth but I think 14 is the best it can do.

1515
Learn Ironclads and Hiawatha has Combustion (good call 'slinger). Hiawathat wants 5550g and Ironclads for Combustion, but will pay us 950g+100gpt for Ironclads straight. We can research Combustion in 4 turns for 1600g out of the treasury(roughly what was accumulated after research was shut off) Economically its the better deal to take his money (2950) and spend it at home.

Cancel the alliance against America with Cleoptra.

Hiawatha wants to trade territory maps. No, that wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.

1520
Pull a settler out of Kyoto to claim some incense in the American badlands
Egyptians come calling..She wants our Protection...Ha!!

1525
Switch Army build in Rome to Wall Street due in 1.
Found Desert Holme to claim incense in badlands
Baltimore has fallen to the Iroquois. CIncinnati isn't worth having. Cancel the alliance with Iroquois and make peace with Abe.

Redirect the troops to Egypt.

Finish Wall Street in Rome

Finish Battlefield Medcine in Cumae.

1530
Hiawatha destroys the Americans.

1535-1550
Much effort spent to get to spt in core for military buildup. Building infantry and artillery and cruisers in coastal cities. After learning combustion set research to flight at max. I want airplanes before tanks as we will need to airlift troops as soon as the American towns get minimal improvements and we learn flight. I want to spot airbases everywhere. Upgraded galleons to transports.

Troop concentrations are in the North of the home continent and in the center of America, on the mountain, in Washington and Seattle. The transport flotilla is heading to Asyut.

It look like we will have airplanes about the time Hiawatha has tanks. He has no rubber and Cleo has no oil.

Core cities are set to produce units (artillery/infantry) in two turns. Rome is building armies in 5.

Other cities are building banks, universities etc, as I anticipate diong self research from here on out. Our net income is >1200gpt after maintenace costs and before science or luxury. I canceled the wines deal with Cleopatra as the incense from Desert Holme replaced it in our inventory. She wanted two techs plus money for its renewal anyway.

Looking ahead, once we deliver a short lesson to Cleopatra (she has some nice old wonders that will add to our income) we will probably want to accelerate the tech pace so that we can see all the toys. Be wary of giving Hiawatha lots of cash as I don't want to see mass upgrades from tanks to Modern Armor, though.

The scut work in the home continent is almost done. There are workers set up to mine and rail a couple of mountains around Sirmium in the north. The specialists require lots of management to get maximum gold and shields and every city is different. The cops work best in towns where we have mulitplier improvements in place, CE's where a factory is not on line, and taxmen almsot nowhere as more gpt is earned by wokring the land than otherwise. There is an aesthete's pleasure in viewing a city screen that is pristine and deviod of corruption, though.

Go play with the toys, scout!

I guess that means I'm up! [dance] I'll probably play this tomorrow...

I really must pay closer attention to your city management Brother Bede... all this time I've been trying to shave a turn here, or a couple there off this or that build... I'm going to scroll through our cities (carefully this time) and take a look at how you've set things up...

In keeping with "a funny thing happened"... and "Let's build a bunch of bombers"... I have an idea. I've been working on some tactics... tested them over the weekend at a lower level, and the mechanics work....

What would you guys think if I suggested forming an elite corps of "Roman Spetsnaz?"

Nice log Bede! I was wondering about the flight call but I the more I think about it the more I like it. Now when we get tanks it will be POW! Hello, Hiawatha! I think we could put this game away fairly quickly if we really wanted to but then we wouldn't see all the toys. We will probably have to do something like eliminate Cleo and then just bide our time and play defense when Hiawatha declares.

I think we'll have plenty of time to employ pretty much anything we want to do. Am I sensing Marines on the Horizon? Nice article BTW. I ll have to publish my civ drinking game rules sooner or later. I employ them in personal games on Saturday nights on occassion. It gets ugly when you lose your capital.

Just remember that the magic numbers are two (food) and ten (shields). Otherwise shields are wasted or you spend time and energy swapping assignments around. That is feasible when you have three villes and ten citizens, not really when you have twenty cities and two hundred.

Of course all rules are bent when a wonder race is involved...but that is where "Mobilization" plays a role. I haven't tested this but I think it is possible to end a Mobilization by renegotiating an existing peace treaty. The downside is that culture acccumulation stops during Mobilization so we would be risking our 100K victory.

Actually, believe it or not... I was thinking... Paratroopers. There are a couple of little... "wrinkles" that are new to conquests that give them the potential to do some serious damage...

This sounds like a "must read"! (as soon as you write it, that is...) You might force Thunderfall into adding an "O-club" to the War Academy!

If I started playing civ with drinking rules, Mrs. Bugs would probably find a way to make my civ disks disappear.

I think an experiment with paratroopers would be a good thing. I would also like to look into Stealth Bombers and Aegis Cruisers.

All the toys, all the toys.

Turn 0 (1550)
Pre-flight check

Scroll through our cities... wow - Bede's pretty good at this commie thing... tempted to make a wisecrack about Massachusetts here... but I live in Florida, and "those who live in glass houses..."

Do a quick diplo check...no wars (yet), 100 gpt coming from Hiawatha for something running out in 10...Iroquois have tech parity, lack rubber

Egypt, lacks oil, salt, down steel, radio, ironclads..

We're have 60% of the worlds population, and 51% of the land area... we're going to have to work to stay under the domination limit if we are to see all the toys...

Take research all the way down to 50%, Flight in 1, take lux to 10%
do a check of our Military...and I do not believe this... not a single ship of the line in our navy. I guess that's what happens when the CNO needs a skip in the industrial era...
Change Antium to Destroyer. Not the best place for a shipyard, but Destroyers are FAST in C3C...
Let's see...we've got a couple of cruiser builds going... I like cruisers a lot.

Transports... I spend a moment to anaylyze our sea lanes, and it appears that our shortest sea lane from our homeland to our newlands is between Asyut and New Orleans - 9 tiles. Our transport in Dallas can actually make 2 trips between Dallas and Lutetia...

Some worker moves...

IBT- I don't like the way that Iroquois naval contingent is moving, but he can only have 2 units...

Cut research to 50%, still get Mass Production Next turn.

Let's see what I can do with this mess.
Hiawatha has 39 Cav
16 of 'em are E-NE of Washington, 1 (1 h.p) is 1 N of Wash., 2 are N of Dallas (undefended)
I've got 2 Guerillas E of San Francisco... 2 Cav, a G, and a couple of Infantry poking their heads out of Egyptian territory E of San Francisco...

Hmm... maybe this would be a good time for a screenie. The gang should be amused.

Whenever, I know a tech race may be close I check to see if another AI has it right when the tech comes in on "the big picture" and then F4. I have had a civ sell out to the others on a tech I had researched but just picked another tech and moved on. Using F4 lets you sell prior to them getting it the same turn. You may have even been able to sell it to Hiawatha.

Oh, so he wants some already! I would play defensive so we don't pop our domination limit. Perhaps the razing of a few large production centers of Hiawatha's will settle him down and assure us of maintaining a tech lead.

barbslinger said:

I had been checking diplomacy with Cleo and Hiawatha each turn... never saw an opportunity to buy or sell a tech with Hiawatha...

...but it doesn't matter now... I suspect we won't be trading much of anything but shots fired in anger for a few turns...

:hammer:

I'm going to do my level best to cut his total number of fast units in half in Turn 5...

No, not while it is your turn. When the tech comes in go to big picture instead of choosing the next tech. Hit F4 from there to sell prior to the AI getting it. Then F6 to select tech to research and then exit out to let the AI go through thier turns.

Let's see...
Cavalry and rifles against artillery and infantry...a lot of hurt should be inflicted soon.

RE Hiawatha's infantry: he could have bought rubber from Cleo and done a mass upgrade as he did have some cash in his pocket, but I didn't think that much.

I am surprised he went for flight instead of tanks. Oh, well.

I seem to always do something that pisses off the big dogs and then they jump off the porch at scout. Must have been the deal for Ironclads...100gpt for flatirons, that does seem a little excessive.

What is about these guys and rubber....

Well... that would be a 'fair statement'. I haven't touched the first unit on the mainland yet, and that stack of Cav... well... they're sorta gone now. :D
RE Hiawatha's infantry: he could have <snip>
Forget Hiawatha's Infantry. We're going to have our first bomber next turn, and our first tank in 2. I just need to brief 'slinger on my findings with Paratroopers...

I'm just thankful that Isadora's not in this game. ;)

Go get 'em Professor! I think Hiawatha picked the wrong guy to attack. Who wants to place any bets that scout has Hiawatha gassed by the time I get it? Any bets that Cuivenen will ever see another Iroquois after scout, me and slinger?
