Bede01:Funny thing happened...

As I was walking up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again to-day.
I wish, I wish he'd stay away.
;)

...trying this again... thankfully, I saved my old popHeads.pcx file...

(Edit: @ 'slinger: I saw the file you posted on the previous page. Thank you for that, I'll snag it later...)

Turn 1 (1355)

City Check:

F1, we have some cops and civil-e types now. This is looking more like it.

MM a citizen from irrigate grass to irrigated plains nets 1 shield, but shaves a turn off Hoover.

Brundisium, change one CE to a cop
Caesaragusta, mm citizen from coast to mined desert shaves 6 turns off Cop shop build
A civil-e in Palmyra takes a turn off the factory, but slows growth...
CE in Jerusalem takes 3 turns off cop shop
Cop in Caesarea takes 2 turns off bank, should spark WLTKD next turn.
CE in Nicomedia takes a turn off copshop (zero growth)
CE in Seleucia takes a turn off court, but costs food...
Cop in Artaxata taxes a turn off court.
CE in Bagacum takes market build from 49 to 25
Eburacum, MM citizen on volcano for 3 spt, and hire a CE takes court from 10 to 3
Corfinium gets a tax
CE in Mediolanum takes court build from 26 to 13
Interesting math in Treveri, a CE takes copshop from 73 to 37...(food shortage)
A second CE in Sirmium takes 5 off market build
Putting a tax collector on a mtn in rome takes a turn off Univ. build
A CE in Mecca takes a turn off Suffrage...
mm citizen to mined hil in Damascus takes 9 off copshop build
Change queue to factory in Antium
CE in Anjar takes 2 turns off bank build
Neopolis hires a CE
CE in Khurasan takes 3 off Library build (curtails growth)

Worker moves...lots of 'em.
Complete some rails in Hispalis, and shave a turn of copshop build
Some mining adn railroading takes 3 more turns off sufferage..
Shaved 2 turns off copshop build in Arentum

Some Galleons auto-move... (?)

I hope Bede wanted that spot on the beach with that settler... he said something about coast... in lieu of New Rome, Bede's Beach claims a last bit of coastline, queue set to court.

=====
IBT - An american Longbow advances into our territory from Denver
Cleo (up fascism) want to trade maps. I decline
Seleucia Court>copshop
=====
Turn 2 (1360)
Diplo check
Hiawatha offers Fascism, Corporation, WM, 30gpt, and 40g for Atomic Theory. The best I can bump his offer is to is 44g.
Lincoln offers silks, 72gpt, and 20g. I up it to 25g, 98gpt, WM, and silks. If Abe attacks now, he'll take a nice rep hit.
Trade Cleo WM for WM+7g

Rush Factory in Veii for 376g, and in Cumae for 292

I don't know why I didn't notice this before... research at zero... I seem to remember Bede and Bugsy doint this to me in another game recently...change tax collector to scientist in rome, radio in 50. We're cookin' with gas now!

Some more worker moves knock 4 more turns off Suffrage... Mine and r/r one more plains tile, and Sufferage is now due in 17. (I can flat do this building stuff guys...wait'll you see what I do with those 2 new factories..) Let me see if I can do something with our Hoover build...

I upgrade a Pike to infantry for ~180g. It Hurt$, but we do have that one american longbow...

After a few more galleons move, I finally get to play with my first units.

=====
IBT -
That stupid American Longbow advances towards our northernmost city.

Turn 3
After playing with this city for a few turns, I get some terrain improved, hire cop, and get a second shield going into the bin in Hippo Regius.

Put an infantry in Mediolanum...

Rush the University in Rome for 490 something gold..

The usual insane amount of worker moves..

===
IBT - We lost our supply of silks...and, in a move that shocked the civilized world, the Americans declared war on us.
The American longbow clips the infantryman for 2hp, and then dies like a good little longbow.
An Egyptian Frigate gets sunk by somebody's Privateer...
Rome University>Stock Exchange
Syracuse Police Station>Factory
Artaxata Court>CopShop
Eburacum Court>CopShop

Turn 4 (1370)
Wake up some artillery in Edo and lob a few shells at the American Frigate/Galleon pair off the coast of Satsuma, Redline both ships
Shuffle a couple of cav armies, some cav, and an elite Legion to the shoreline N of Dallas.

Rush the Police Station in Caesaraugusta for 396g
...and the bank in Neaopolis for ~500

Let's review the troops. Hmm... on second thought, let's not.

Upgrade our Trebuchet (singular) in Damascus
Upgrade our Horseman (singular) in Palmyra
240g to upgrade a Warrior?!?!? I don't THINK so...we'll just use 'em for MPs when we go commie...
Send an elite MDI to Denver. He faces a fearsome looking regular spearman.
I'm having a heckuva time finding elites without a * by the name. ("Sling-Ho"... :lol: ) I send a few elite spears in there left over from my "whack-a-barb" days... :D

Change build orders in Cumae and Veii to Infantry and Artillery, respectively.
Upgrade a Musket in Pompeii. Upgrade a couple of pikes.

Let's see... I love this part... wartime diplomacy...

Dial up Hiawatha. MA V. America for 100g.
Dial up Cleo. MA. v. America for Atomic Theory. Cleo is now "cautious". And scout is now "amazed".

Send 4 Galleons homeward.. we need to be able to shuffle some troops from home...

...to be continued...

Bede, you sure you want to see the Communist Italians on Alpha Centuri? We could spank Abe and be on our way to domination/conquest.

scoutsout<-- :blush: is almost afraid to post his turnlog. And definitely embarrassed.

Um, guys, all I can say is, I'm real, real sorry. But our campaign against the Americans suffered a ... setback. Things were really rocking along - until turn 9. :ack:

IBT - American Frigate/Galleon withdraw
Neaopolis Bank>Factory
Khurasan Library>CopShop
Caesaraugusta CopShop>Galleon
=====
Turn 5 (1375)
Shuffle some Galleons homeward

Finally, some real combat.
13/13 Cavalry Army kills Vet Rifleman in Dallas, and then I use him to kill the Regular Rifleman, and the city is ours.
12/12 Cav Army kills rifleman defending Mpondo. Waits while a Single Vet Cav whacks the regular spear. Mpondo falls.
4/4 Cav kills Vet Rifleman. Next cav takes a h.p. off reg rifleman, retreats.
Shuffle 3 Cav into Dallas. Sling-Ho retreats, no damage. Elite* kills Rifle, 2/5. 4/4 Cav dies, rifle 1/3. 4/4 Cav kills Rifle. Intombe is ours.

Upgrade a Pike and MDI in Tokyo. I have left that island awfully thin..

Denver is now defended by a regular rifle. I hope that spear is still there...
Wake a Cav in Trapezus. He kills the rifle without a scratch. Reveals another 3/3 Rifle.
Wake another Cav in Trapezus, he kills the Rifle and Denver falls.

Some iron mining and MM takes CopShop build in Trapezus from 71 to 48 turns.

Veii hires a policeman.

Short rush, then rush a Galleon in Caesaraugusta.
Do some mining on a hill in Aurelianorum, and some MM to knock a turn off CopShop.

Take a Cav and lose him at New Orleans. Take a Cav Army, whack the (freshly promoted) elite rifle, and the spear. New Orleans is ours. (but this cav army needs a rest)
Shuffle an infantryman into Intombe, and get Hadrian out of harm's way.
As much as I would rather let the other cav army rest, The Musket that is in a fort outside Boston will be a rifle next turn. I take a 9/12 Army, whack the musket, take 2 slaves.

=====
IBT - other than some ship movement... NOTHING!!!!!
Pompeii CopShop>Hospital
Ravenna University>CopShop
Nicomedia CopShop>Bank
=====
Turn 7 (1385)
Shuffle 2 Cav and 2 infantry onto the American continent.

*****Battle for Boston*****
4/4 Cav takes cannon shot in the face, kills 4/4 rifle, promotes
4/4 Cav kills 3/3 rifle
4/5* Cav retreats, rifle 2/3
Sling-Ho kills 2/3 rifle, we take Boston, and Magellans!
Boston comes with a rax and the cannon gets upgraded.

This could get interesting, I think Boston was Abe's only source of salt...

I take an Infantryman out of Intombe and put him on a mountain 2 E of Washington, capturing a worker in the process. I'm going to try and put a stack of redlegs on this rock.

Rush the Stock Exchange in Rome for 284g
Rush the Factory in Antium for 274g

Rome Stock Exchange>Hospital
Antium Factory>Hospital (9)

Worker moves... whacking at some jungle...hopefully the team likes the "trimming of the land" I'm doing...

Get Denver connected..

Rush court in Arretium 148g, Gordiun (212g), Curria (128) Corfinium (128)

Put 3 more arty on the mountain overlooking Washington.

Hadrian returns to Rome to Lecture political science students on the theory behind Secret Police Headquarters and communal systems of government.

=====
IBT - some naval movement, Americans advance 2 militia on Boston, land one guerrilla on former Japanese soil.
Boston deposes our governor. (It was size 1, and not rioting...)
Cumae Infantry>Infantry

Jerusalem Police Station>Market
Arretium Court>Copshop, hire a cop, 2 shields going into the bin now.
Gordion Court>Copshop (2 shields in the bin)
Corfinium Court>Copshop
Order restored in Denver
Curia court>Copshop
===
Turn 9 (1395)

Oh man... this is bad... this is real, real bad.. all those cavalry were healing in the rax in Boston, ready to take Washington on the next turn. A size 1 city with a freakin' ARMY and a bunch of cav in it... I think I'm going to :vomit: I thought if you stuck enough troops in a town it wouldn't flip. Anyone who advances such a theory is full of it. Our Cavalry army takes out the one rifleman defending the city, and one of the militia. one of our last remaining Cavalry dies attacking the second guerrilla. Our very last solo cav picks off the guerrilla.

I hate culture flips.

Short rush, then rush a library in boston. Rush the hospital in Rome. And in Pisae. Change build orders in Veii and Cumae to Cav. Rush the factory in Hispalis.

Shuffle some units, but a line of infantry on outside Boston...

Lots of worker moves..

=====
IBT- American naval units shuffle away from Roman holdings in former Japan.
Rome Hospital>ARMY
Boston Library>Temple
Vironicum Factory>Cav
Pisae Hospital>Cav
Hispalis Factory>Cav
Tarentum Police Station>Factory
=====
Turn 10 (1400)
Move our Cav army to Intombe. We need to quell some resistors...

Mostly worker moves after losing all that cav. Lob another volley of Artillery at Washington. We need more Artillery there if we're going to cut that city down to size.

Rush and short rush a temple in Boston.

After Action Review:

The Good: I didn't reload. I took ... I think 5 cities from America. I got a lot of builds hurried along.

The Bad: I'm not feeling so good right now.

The ugly: I lost an absolutely ridiculous number of cavalry when Boston flipped. I hurried some things along to start re-building, but that probably set us back about 5 turns overall, and it will take some time to reconstitute any part of our military that can mount a meaningful assault on Washington.

I would have preferred to build a nice mix of Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry, so we could put some infantry in those former Japanese cities. I also wanted to build a few stock exchanges... but got yanked out of 'builder mode'.

Sorry team...

Yeah, that was a rough break. It kinda frosts me a bit. I was planning on having that cavalry army standing in WASHINGTON at the end of turn 9. I was playing what I thought was a pretty decent set of turns. Got a lot of courts and police stations moving along for the switch to communism. I even got us a GL, if we want to rush something.

I guess if it had been a size 10 city in full riot, that would be one thing. But a single (happy) citizen overthrowing an infantry, a cav army, plus the other cav in there.... it's just not #@%@%@ fair.

I don't think there is anyone on the planet who hates culture flips more than I do right now.

If there is an up-side, it's that we invested in a whole bunch of factories, and Hoover is on line now. We've got several cities capable of spitting out cav in 2-4 turns. A few rounds of that (and an army due in 7) and we should be able to reconstitute our Cav. Abe has not been able to counter with more than a token force, so we should be able to bounce back.

Don't sweat it scout. You played some solid turns there with some very good decisions. Now you know why I was so paranoid in GK2 about a Kagoshima flip.

We will recover just fine.

Oh! I'm up! Got it.
So where are we on the road to Communism? Do we have tech and just wait for courthouses or are we still researching?

We got the tech. We were waiting for Hoover and some infrasructure to finish before buying Lenin his train ticket to Rome.

@ Bugsy: Thanks. I felt even worse last night after GK e-mailed me a link to a culture flip calc. I loaded the save, counted the squares and units, and the odds were something like 0.23%. I may load that save again tonight, sack Washington, and call it therapy...

On tech/gov't: We have the tech. We've got courthouse and police station builds going all over the place. We've got Hoover, and a leader to rush the SPHQ wherever you want it. We're a few turns from Sufferage, and IMO, it'd be nice to deny that wonder to the other civs.

...but you might want to build some units before revolting. :ack:

Edit: Cross-posted with Bede.

We can take this one wherever we like so how about a vote from the team.

@ Bugsy: One other thing - research - I hired a scientist in Rome. That was pretty much it on research.

@ Bede: My vote: Sack anything and everything blue. Then sack most of what's Yellow and Purple. Leave 'em in the smoke on our way to Alpha C.

Jeez, can't you be a little more definite.

Results so far:
Scout-pillage then burn (in that order, please)

Being Romans, I think we should own the entire world. It has been a while since I've played a real conquest game. I vote conquest.

I do think that Abe needs to be relegated to the annals of history no matter what we decide to do.

If we can knock em out lets conquest. I do want to see communism in place though. I've never been a commie and want to see it in action. Then lets wipe them off our planet.
