But I want to embrace the FFH goodness once again. What is the best way to get started again?
I can see there is a lot of ModMods available at the moment. What is the best recommendations for the most FFHlike experience but still in development?

start with more naval AI, it's the current baseline. afterwards you could try Extramodmod, and then of course there's Rife and Orbis ( development stopped ) and Master of Mana ( development currently on hold, should restart soon )

You could also play Magisters modmod. His mod stays true to the lore of FFH2 and adds many improvements upon the game without changing the core Civs or adding new ones and new spells etc, unlike all of the other big FFH2 modmods.

It adds new spells. (And a LOT more mechanics).

More Naval AI is the improved version of base FFH, focusing on AI tweaks to make single player better. Erebus in the Balance is focused on multiplayer balance and stability.

The rest of the modmods focus on adding stuff, some of it well-thought out, some of it not.
