Is there some resource with general tips for beginners? How to start off the game, etc...

My cities always progress very slowly, and that's just the start of my probs.

Visit both the Info Center (basic facts) and the War Academy (strategies and tactics) here at CivFanatics (from the front page). Both provide far more useful information than the game manual.

Well, I would suggest you visit my Civ3 website; it has a lot of information on it. Maybe it would prove helpful to you. (And I strongly recommend against getting used to using the Great Library as a crutch).

Further to Sullla's comment regarding The Great Library, I would recommend avoiding getting used to using any Wonder, Civilization attribute, or Civilization Specific Unit all the time. Also don't get used to being able to win on only certain map settings, etc. Part of being a good player is being able to use any civilization effectively, and being able to play well without getting certain wonders.

As a newbie myself I generally build hard and fast. For every city I build I immediately build a settler and send him out and so on. After a while I settle in to building up the units and improvements. Before I began doing this my score was really pathetic, now it's really improved.

Still learning though and one day I'll make it to the HoF here on Civ Fanatics! That's my goal and I'm sticking to it!

You try. Then you try again. Then you try again. Then you try again. Again. Again. Again. Then you get it.
