Other than the movement benefits, is there actually any benefit to linking all your cities with roads?

There isn't a city link gold benefit is there? No other bonuses?

Basically I want to find out if it is worth sending rubbish early internal trade routes to build roads between all my cities rather than sending more lucrative international ones.

P.S. finding the UI in general to be pretty confusing...

With the new movement rules, I find the movement benefits of roads to be quite nice. Without roads, units move painfully slow in civ6.

internal trade routes are infinitely more valuable then external trade routes, in my experience. They took a nod form Civ Beyond Earth on this one and made it so you can jump start beginning cities as well as tailoring cities you want to grow/gain more production. I find that, personally, more valuable than gold from trade.

Other than the trade itself and the movement, I don't believe there are any other inherent benefits from roads.

Roads are HUGELY important. In latter stages of game you may have barbarians where yoiu cannot help and having roads quickly helps move the army where you need them.

They let your enemy know in which direction their next looting/conquering opportunity lies.

I would say early game internal trade routes are superior but mid-late game it seems you get the same benefits in terms of production and food from international routes with the addition of science and culture.

That's not the case for me. Even with the policies dedicated to getting extra food and industry from external routes, I find the internal trade routes are better for that. You realize they get better as a city grows, right? As a city builds more districts, it provides more food and hammers on the internal trade routes that originate from it. So late game has the highest bonuses. Although yeah they probably don't scale linearly with the hammer tax, which maxes at 900%, I believe.

I do a mix of internal and external right now. Gold is really nice, just as valuable as production I think. Im not sure which one is better, but I think they're close enough to be similar mid/late game
