Best civ for ancient through modern roleplay?

Random suggestion; start as China but settle the very north-east of the map (or simply Siberia, I suppose), instead of China. You're far out of the way, outside of any flipzones... I wonder how your game would progress.

Similarly; Egypt in South Africa. But someone has done that already, I think.

Maya in eastern South America or western North America?

Yeah, GOOD LUCK with that. Siberia is 90% tundra, 10% marsh. You will never be able to progress and worse, China is the most handicapped civs in the mod. They suffer inflation more, their tech costs increase the most thru era, their maintenances are higher and i wouldn't be surprised if they even have a hammer handicap.

Not to be a buzzkill but the same is true for Egypt or Babylonia or basically the whole premise of this thread.

At least Egypt and Babylonia were cohesive, singular (if loose) civilizations that encompassed the regions they inhabit in game.

If someone wanted an accurate post-contact Polynesia they’d have to collapse to core as the Tu’i Tonga Empire and even that would be a favorable position.

Huh, I must have done something wrong. I settled in place, used the starting army to conquer Egypt, played relatively normally to conquer Italy, then collapsed Greece and held on to Athens, finally conquered Spain after they spawned. That and losing a city to the Arabs killed my stability and I gave up

I settled in place

Thats your problem. You dont settle in place as Phoenicia. It's 100 times better just exodus your way to Carthage. It's much, much safer there. You still have the moors and spanish to deal but it's better than to deal with, say, Greece, Rome, Persia, Arabia, Byzantium, Seljuks, Mongols and Turks

Setting in place was necessary to prevent a city in Egypt from becoming my capital. Maybe Italy+Greece+Africa+Egypt is too much and I should stick to just Italy+Greece+Africa

Settle first 2 cities in Maghreb Core. Don't even settle Iberia until after the European Barbarian Hordes have died down. Conquer Roman Italy as soon as possible. Conquer France, then Britain, Holy Rome, Poland if they've already spawned, Russia, Poland if they've already spawned, and you should be set for the rest of the game.

If you let Britain or Russia build up, it will be nigh impossible to stop them. You want your conquered territories other than Rome and Greece to be under the control of their original, now vassalized, owners. You can't control the world without vassalizing the majority of it, and if Spain controls Spain and Moors control Cordoba you'll be in no danger of a respawn. Word to the wise however, NEVER try to vassalize the Dutch, they're a proud people, and would rather die without option than live willingly under your heel.
