thinking about playing a island /archipelago map for the first time, what are the top civs for that?

England & Ottomans jump to the top of the list among standard civs.

(England: +2 movement in water & one of their UUs replaces a Frigate)

(Ottoman: Unique ability that has a shot at converting barbarian naval ships.)

Honorable mention to the civ that has an achievement for conquering a city on another landmass as well [just for the achievement]

england or polynesia.

ship of the lines are crazy powerful on archipelago, especially with the extra movement granted.
polynesia can gather up a ludicrous amount of ancient ruins with their immediate ocean embarking ability.

Polynesia, England, Ottomans in that order. Polynesia is built for archipelago, and England has a strong naval UA. Ottomans also have a naval (if not great) UA. Really though, because of the nature of a naval game, any of the civs can be enormously successful.

I'd say it's really a race at the bottom. Who's the worst civ on a naval map? The Iroquois and Inca jump to the front IMO.

America's not that thrilling on a Water Map, since their UA affects land units.

I have all the DLC's. Poly seems like they would be really good early on for exploring,,but I don't know if they would be solid enough in the long game.I think I really want to give England a go.....also haven't tried Korea yet and I wonder if they might be good on a water map. Also thinking about Spain....they could be good if u could get to Chivalry fast.

decided to go with England. Got 2 cities up fast.....Rome is going to be first victim. No iron on my starting island....iron 2 islands away.England is very fast at discovering.

I wouldn't choose Korea on an archipelago map as having a caravel replacement that can't enter deep ocean would be too much of a pain.

Poly is the absolute best, especially with slower games speed.
Tireme is also able to sail on ocean so it can always flee is there is any problem.
5 tireme with logistic+1 scout can capture any coastal city in 2 turn. And all cities are coastal.
It does not even needs to be upgraded really. In marathon it is so easy that it is boring.

When playing a Archipelago game, you should know that the AI is not very good at maps like that, so I would recommend that you pick your opponents from nations that also get a relevant bonus.

England gets the movement bonus.
Ottomans gets a cheap navy.
Songhai gets defence on embarked units.
Polynesia gets the ocean bonus.
Denmark get the disembark bonus.
Spain gets Conquistadors and exploration bonus.

America and Japan can also be quite good on water maps. India and Egyps can also be good because they don't need alot of land.

polynesia for peaceful game. The advantage of getting all the ruins and meeting the other civs super early can set them up to exploit the heck out of the RA system. Signing RAs with every civ when they haven't yet met each other is such a huge advantage...

England, Ottoman, or Denmark for conquering game. Also, Spain is fun. Conquistadors running around killing barbs/finding ruins, then settling next to a natural wonder, is just cool.

Depends on your style (and if you have the DLC).

Denmark is just crazy good. I personally prefer Songhai just to prevent my embarked units from getting wiped out by caravels, and the extra money from pirating is just fun.

Honestly not an england fan. YMMV, but the slight extra movement has just never made that much of a difference to me. Which is a sham, England was by far my favorite in Civ4

Combine the existing movement buff with GL and the commerce policy and you have an English navy that can defeat AI navies 6x as big.

I can't believe I forgot Denmark. I'm going to have to give them a try on a naval map soon.

Polynesia really is the best though. Even setting aside Moai, the ability of a trireme and scout to cover the whole map by the time other civs are just getting Astronomy is very powerful. They warmonger just fine on a naval map, and are the clear favorite for a culture victory on Archipelago.

it's really sotls combined with the movement that make england great on water maps.
the movement lets melee units move 5+ water tiles so they can at least keep up for capturing cities.

Polynesia on marathon to get most outof your advantage. Go cultural with a few great cities, use those Moai!

Ottoman or Denmark are best for domination and England are pretty all-round (longbowmen are awesome for defense on archi).

As said, some civs that are not naval by definition are really good at being isolated and going tall.

so far England has been good.....can move alot even with trireme's. just got both of their UU and now going to take out a few civ (korea and France)...Rome was easy(eliminated by turn 75) ,I don't think the AI has any idea how to play a water map. Can't wait to try another CIV.

oh I don't deny that it's a great benefit, just that compared to a more direct combat bonus (like denmark) or a real economic gain (like the Songhai) it's just not as good.

Really? Roll England on Archipelago. Build Great Lighthouse. Pick up the Commerce naval bonus.

Win, win, win. Seriously it's easily as great of a bonus as Denmark gets.

There's obviously still a lot to be said for Polynesia.
