I dont know whether this will turn into a proper list, but it could do. Depends on the interest.

There are some games, and some mods, which seem to make the original vanilla version totally inferior in every single way. Sometimes its a mere change to the interface, sometimes its a complete overhaul. Mods are many and varied. Which ones do you consider to be the best you have ever played? I shall start:

X COM - The Long War

If you are a fan of X COM, then i highly recommend this mod. It does away with the 4 class system of soldiers replacing it with 8 new classes (medic, engineer, rocketeer, assault, infantry, gunner, sniper and scout). As well as a large sub section of mechs. The mechanics are completely redone and air combat reimagined. In fact, its list of changes is so extensive, i would go as far to say that its a reimagining of the reimagined game. Its different enough to be tantamount to a new DLC.

Civ IV the BUG/BAT mod with Blue Marble

Games like Civ need a good interface in order to enable the player, particularly on higher difficulties, to be able to play the game. This mod achieved just that. It didnt change much in the way of fundamental mechanics, it offered you more information. Lots of information. It almost reinvented the game for me. I found i became a much better player over night because the design was so much better than vanilla. I could now entertain thoughts of playing at immortal, whereas before i was on the periphery of emperor. When it came bundled with blue marble, this just made it even better.

Doom - Brutal Doom

Did you ever play and like doom? Well then, you should give this a shot. Its about the bloodiest game i have ever played and so much fun. check out youtube videos of it if you dont believe me. It warranted me to play through the game again after all these years, so it must be pretty decent. Its also highly compatible and runs with many other types of wad.

Doom - Risen 3D

I think doom was the first game to really be extensively overhauled by community fans. this mod, albeit not to everyones liking, deserves a special mention. It fully renders doom in 3D accelerated graphics with dynamic lighting and textures. A considerable amount of work went into this, and it was basically a blueprint for all those high texture packs you can grab now for games that are released today (Skyrim and oblivion texturepacks are a case in point).

Half life 2 - Cinematic mod

Like the above, a considerable amount of time and effort went into this. If you play its latest incarnation today, it transforms a game that is over 10 years old into a thing of beauty. you need a good system to run it however. But in terms of models and the like, this makes halflife 2 look as good as modern day shooters.

Half life - Black mesa

this could almst be considered a stand alone game, and if you have not played it, then i implore you to check it out. It totally over hauls the half life world in the source engine. The result? A game that many professional developers would be pleased with. Its also has the best music i have ever heard in a fan made modification.

Feel free to add your own. If we get a decent list up, we could collate them under some sort of index.

-plenty of Civ3 mods
Spoiler :
some examples are: Pentagenisis, RiseAndRule, DyP, Rhye's of Civilization, TBX-R, MEM, Warhammer, AoI, TCW50s, Escape from Zombie Island, Worldwide, CCM

- Fall From Heaven for Civ4

- some Morrowind mods I'd have to google. I liked them less for altering but more for extending the game.

-Fallout 3: Arefu Extended (see above) and several graphic updates.

Civ4 bts - Giant Earth Map

Makes a huge map of the world with 34 civs and tons of resources with some tweaks to a few techs, buildings and stuff. It's just an epic experience.

Rhye rise and fall on civ4, later DoC.

CK2 had couple of good mod, but constant updates (yes, they can be negative thing) has outdated them a lot.

I would go as far as to call it an unofficial expansion pack that makes the game insanely difficult compared to vanilla, but it is a blast.

Also, Legends of Revolution for CivIV and Floris for Mount and Blade are two of the best mods I ever played along with Long War.

It does a bit of both i think. It makes it a bit easier and a bit harder at the same time. I would only recommend playing it on the easiest difficulty at first though.

Age of Imperialism for Civ 3. GREAT mod, one of my more favorite mods ever.

A Game of Thrones for Crusader Kings II, another terrific and immersive mod.

In no particular order:

(1) Fall From Heaven (Civilization 4)

(2) Open Source Project (Freespace 2)

(3) A Pop Divided / Pops of Darkness (Victoria 2)

(4) Winterberg Mod (Emergency 4)

(5) Magna Mundi (Europa Universalis 3)

Honorable mention:
The complete collection of Skyrim mods. Together they turn it into a completely new and so much better game.

1) Europe in Ruins for Company of Heroes

2) Rise of Mankind for Civ 4

3) Synergies for Torchlight 2

Fallout 3 - FWE (Fallout Wanderer's Edition). The base game is way way too easy, FWE aims to change all that. Weapons are brutally strong, not just in your hands, but in the hands of your enemies too, making combat more fast paced and exciting. Ammo and medicine has weight and are a lot harder to find, making conservation a factor, at least in the early game. Barter as a skill is a lot more important, with low Barter skill merchants will fleece you for all you're worth. I would never dream of playing Fallout 3 again without FWE.

Skyrim - Requiem. Does for Skyrim essentially what FWE does for Fallout 3, makes a much more challenging experience. Enemies are static leveled instead of scaling. Perk trees are redone and perks are now CRUCIAL to your character, your numerical level doesn't matter much except as a way to get more perks, the game is 98% about your perks and your equipment. Enemies are generally hard but have weaknesses you can exploit if you prepare properly. Archery is very very strong against light armored targets but does almost nothing against heavy armor. Too many changes for me to list really, suffice it to say that since I've discovered Requiem I've been playing Skyrim a lot when previously I had given up on it because it was boring.

You've already mentioned Long War for XCOM, it's got some issues that need addressing in the next version though. It's worth checking out but it's not finished, some aspects of the game are more aggravating than fun at this stage.

Better Spore for Spore?

Just kidding, I would say Nraas mods for The Sims 3.

I was actually going to mention Nraas as well. I can't believe I forgot the PDM. Another fantastic mod. Additionally I also really really like AAR for Darkest Hour. :goodjob:

Requiem is a great mod, however needs some tweaking, because most of the "features" such as bow disarmament (or any disarmament "feature") break the experience, and the damage threshold for either you and the enemy makes this game, to be blunt, completely and absolutely unplayable. However, once tweaked, then this game plays as it should, to make the game challenging and interesting.

I haven't found the disarmament to be anything more than a minor annoyance, much less making the game unplayable. I have hundreds of hours in the mod without disabling those features, so saying they make the game unplayable is a bit of a stretch. Some of the features do need tweaking though, the mass effect system for example in my mind adds annoyance to the game without giving anything back. Also the official Dragonborn patch is... divisive. I personally think it's awful. Other than that, I only have minor niggles with it, and Requiem Plus fixes most of those.

Not a stretch, the truth. Using any type of bow or crossbow is next to impossible, and using melee weapons at a time is tedious. No. It's the truth.
