Hello there, been lurking on this forum for a while, so I figured I'd create an account and share what was probably the best moment I've experienced in around 200 hours of playing this game.
I started a large, marathon, 22 civ game on the Europe map as the Aztecs. After a few turns passed, I started to meet my neighbors. On turn 5, I met the Zulus, then on turn 7, I met the Huns. Shortly after, I met the Mongols, and Germany and thought to myself that it'd be funny if Greece was as well (Turns out they were, found them a little bit to the west).
The part that really caught me off guard was the Zulus and the Huns declaring war on me on around turn 50 without provocation. I had 2 jaguar warriors at the time and didn't expect a huge war this early on.
It took about 5 turns for the Zulus to send their army to my capital. It wasn't that intimidating, 3 warriors and 1 archer along with a great general, so I figured I could win pretty easily by fighting defensively. It was also around this time when I realized the Huns were nowhere to be seen.
After chasing the Zulus away from my land and back to their capital, I noticed a single Hunnic warrior on his way to my capital. I quickly sent my two jaguar warriors back to my city, figuring it was better to be safe than sorry. It turns out that it would be the only thing saving me from destruction.
The largest army I've ever seen this early on arrived on my doorstep at around turn 100. There were 4 warriors, 2 archers, and a horse archer all ready to begin the attack. After the archers annihilated a random barbarian that found its way to my land, the warriors began to attack my city. I positioned one jaguar warrior by the horse archer and started weakening him, while my other was in my capital to weaken the enemy warriors.
I only just barely made it, there was a single enemy warrior left when my city had 0 health, and taking him out was difficult with how wounded my jaguars were. I got incredibly lucky that the AI didn't decide to gang up on my wounded during the siege, and also that the computers decided to come in waves. Never before in all of my games with domination being the only victory setting have I experienced the possibility of defeat this early on.
If you've experienced something similar, or you've got an interesting story about one of your games, please share it, as these stories are very entertaining.
