Best ways to counter Aztec's jaguar?

I was just playing a game with my friend, and somewhere around turn 140, Monty sends 4 jaguars and two archers at my capital, Palenque. A few turns later, they're dispatched, and I start preparing for a counter attack on Tenochtitlan. Now I figure they probably have quite a few jaguars in the area, and I've never faced one with melee before, so I'm not exactly sure what they're capable of. The northern area of the map where I and the Aztecs are is jungle laden, and I have tech up to the end of the Classical era.

Forgot to take screenshots, sorry.

How many jungles are there around Tenochtitlan?

Attack from the side with the most wide, open spaces with compbows. If not, wait until Longswords/Trebs to take him out.

Don't put your units on jungle tiles if there are jaguars nearby. And try not to attack jaguars with melee if they are in jungle.

On open terrain, Jaguars are toast against a large force of ranged units; they're barely any better than standard Warriors. In the jungle or forest, they can be a pain. You'll probably want to use spearmen (or swordsmen, if available) to shield your ranged units from attack. Place ranged units on any available hills or on your side of any clearings in the jungle/forest. Have melee units in front of the archers doing nothing but fortify.

For some civs, countering with UUs of your own can work. Greek hoplites and Persian immortals can likely go toe-to-toe with Jaguars even in jungle and come out ahead, as long as you're careful. If you're playing the Iroquois, tech to Iron Working and turn the tables on the Aztecs with mohawk warriors. Carthaginian war elephants are another possibility, since their "fear" ability (reducing enemy strength) will offset the jaguar combat bonus.

In my own games, Aztecs are almost always the first civ to fall behind in games they are in.
So best in my book is to out science them and best them with units an era or two ahead of them.
