This is a visual map list showing a generic description of the single-player maps found in Beyond The Sword. I've seeded each map type several different times to verify the general layout of the seed. Descriptions are below:

Archipelego - Multiple different islands, some large, some small. Civilizations may start on the same landmass as each other.
Balanced - One large landmass with several small islands. Civilizations start on the primary landmass close to the ocean.
Continents - Two to three large continents. Civilizations are spread evenly across the continents.
Custom Continents - Two to three large continents with multiple tiny islands scattered throughout. Civilizations are spread across the continents
Fantasy Realm - A solid land mass dotted with small freshwater lakes. Terrain types including desert, tundra, and ice are randomly strewn across the map.
Fractal - Map seeded off mathematical formulas. It normally takes the form of thin, snaky continents. Starts are random, normally along the shoreline.
Great Plains - Map modeled after the US's great plains regions. Lots of plains, some desert, some forest, and some rivers. Starts are random.
Highlands - Based off the Indo-Asian steppe's. Lots of hills, grassland, and tundra. Lots of forest, tiny lakes, and a small amount of jungle. Starts are random.
Hub - Central hub with extending landmasses, like spokes on a wheel. Each player starts on a spoke. Optimized for 10 players.
Ice Age - Lots of ice, lots of tundra. Very little habitable land. Spread out in thin continents with lots of water. Starts are random.
Inland Sea - Large landmass surrounding a salt-water sea. Starts are random, but set back from the sea.
Islands - Moderate sized islands spread across the map. Each player starts on their own island.
Lakes - Solid landmass with multiple salt-water lakes. Starts are random, but almost always near water.
Mirror - Map appears as though it were folded in half and mirrored. Starts are concentric and mirror the opposite side.
Oasis - Large desert spread across the center with water bordering on one side. Starts are fairly random, but close to the desert.
Pangaea - Solid landmass with a good amount of water. Has a Mediterranean feel, except with a lot of ice. Starts are completely random.
Maze - Square and blocky, land makes a maze through the water. Starts are random.
Ring - A ring of interconnected islands surround a scatter of snow and tundra. Each player starts on their own island.
Shuffle - Should have been labeled "Random". Every possible aspect of this map is completely random. Unsurprisingly, starts are also random.
Team Battlegrounds - Snow, tundra, grassland, desert, then the reverse. A lot like Mirror, but with more random elements. Starts are random.
Terra - A map similar to earth. Multiple continents, medium and small islands mixed in. Players start on the largest landmasses available.
Tilted Axis - A landmass and islands tilted to face a diagonal direction. Players start on the largest landmasses.
Wheel - Similar to Hub, map looks like a wheel. Islands interconnect to each other and to a central hub. Players start on their own island.
Arboria - One large continent completely covered in forest. Starts are random, but close to the ocean.
Big And Small - One large continent and several small islands. Player start is random.
Boreal - A very cold map. Lots of forest, lots of snow, several small lakes. Terrain is primarily tundra and plains. Player starts are random.
Donut - A circular continent with a large circular mountain range in the middle. Players start against the ocean, like numbers on a clock.
Global Highlands - A large continent with lots of plains and forest. Player start is random.
Rainforest - Need I say more? lots of rainforest, grassland, and desert with some mountains thrown in. Player starts are random.
Medium And Small - Lots of tiny, small, and medium islands. Even more water. Player starts are random.

I have started as Summerian Empire on an island with Zulu, how bad is that ? (got copper yay ^^) deviousness of an archipelago map

Capital BFC's can have mountains, which is possible in normalized mapscripts.
Balanced - One large landmass with several small islands. Civilizations start on the primary landmass close to the ocean.
Continents - Two to three large continents. Civilizations are spread evenly across the continents. Generates continents, but it's random...really random. I've seen pseudo-pangaea maps with a virtual inhabitated continent somewhere in the ocean.
Basically, you have mineral resources in the western mountainous regions. In SW, you have a flood plains region. In the middle, you have a huge wasteland of plain tiles. In the eastern, you have the lush greenish lands with many food spots. In the SE, you typically have a water splurge with only clams and fishes.
No rice and no ivory in the entire map. The eastern part of the map has a dearth of happy resources and those available are fur and calendar resources. No high commerce resources except the occasional gem spot from the plain region fringes.
Food are mainly corns, deers and pigs. Marble are findable in the lush part. Stone can spawn everywhere except the lush part. It happens occasionally there, but only if a plain tile has spawned there before and that's why the greenish part has few stones.

Highlands - Based off the Indo-Asian steppe's. Lots of hills, grassland, and tundra. Lots of forest, tiny lakes, and a small amount of jungle. Starts are random.
Can have mountains in capital BFC and I've seen desert gold tiles...ugh.
Hub - Central hub with extending landmasses, like spokes on a wheel. Each player starts on a spoke. Optimized for 10 players.
Ice Age - Lots of ice, lots of tundra. Very little habitable land. Spread out in thin continents with lots of water. Starts are random.
Can be continents, pangaeas or fractal-like. The general outline of the maps is indeed random.

Inland Sea - Large landmass surrounding a salt-water sea. Starts are random, but set back from the sea.

Known for its rich rivery regions and multiple gold tiles. This mapscript occasionnally allows bugs like a resource under the capital at the start of the game. Can hurt the AI if the only food resource is under the initial settler.

Islands - Moderate sized islands spread across the map. Each player starts on their own island.
Lakes - Solid landmass with multiple salt-water lakes. Starts are random, but almost always near water.

Known for its profusion of forests.

Mirror - Map appears as though it were folded in half and mirrored. Starts are concentric and mirror the opposite side.
Oasis - Large desert spread across the center with water bordering on one side. Starts are fairly random, but close to the desert.

Indeed, extremely random and starts are not sifted with the normalizer, so expect the common no resources starts. Odd number players start south while even number players start north. Human player in SP is always starting south unless he finds a way to change its player number. Horses are always north just like marble and seafoods.
Wheats are north too. Iron is in the desert. Corns are in the desert. Gold too. Gems are south and silver are north. Forests, there are plenty in the north and few in the south. Pigs, rice=south. Stone in the desert. The map always generates 4 rivers that go south to north with random meanders.

Known to be larger in size than typical maps.

Very unbalanced starts too. Minimum for a start is 2 deers IIRC from earlier testing.
Resources are limited. There are furs, deers (lots), stone, marble, iron, copper, horses, gems, gold (extremely rare because it has to spawn on a rare plain tile), silver, wheat and some few other resources I don't remember (like the occasional fish or crabs). Health is a major problem if you chop your forests. Resources trading is extremely hard...
Production is also hard from mines, whipping is best. Laying cottages is also hard because few plain tiles and extremely few grass tiles. Also, if you spawn in a river-less region, you're doomed as unforested tundra without fresh water is unimprovable!

Known for its richness in food. Players start is jungle free 3 tiles away. Conquering an AI neighbour is pretty good given the free jungle-free lands.

Medium And Small - Lots of tiny, small, and medium islands. Even more water. Player starts are random.

My additions in blue.

Great list (with great green text bonus :D )
Will be easier to know what type of map I'm playing if choose some..

Guys, sorry for a silly question but I have BTS 3.19 and I can't find many of the maps mentioned here. Do I need to download some additional pack or something?
