hello all,

i'm playing regent vanilla and i wanted to go for a diplomatic victory but the AI keeps threatning me! they keep saying give us maps and gold or give us tech. if i agree i end up giving something i didn't want to and lose a trading chance if not they declare war on me even if they are two continents away and can't reach me with a strong attack! every time i end up building a strong attack and kicking their ass but is this the best solution?

my question is what do you do to avoid getting sucked into wars?

Having a strong military, with lots of offensive units, is an excellent way to prevent the AI attacking - for obvious reasons.

Exactly. If you have a weak military, the AS see you as an easy prey and start to mob at you. (pay us and nothing bad will happen to you...) :D

got it. so build up my military with strong attacking units, leave them in the city or roaming nearby and work on the diplomacy.

thanks guys

When I was in army, our batallion commander said to us that "only way to keep peace is building army" ;) So pretty much same thing works in world of Civ.

Kind of ironic, institution what I is ment to be for war is way for peace.

You know when you're in the trade screen and the advisor says:

"The (whoever) fear our Cavalry"

You have to have Cavalry for them to fear it.

Keep a strong defence force on hand. Units with a high defence are best for this. I make it a point to have two of the best defence units that i can make in each city as soon as i can. The AI doesnt threaten me much and if it does i always refuse and they never declare war.

So what makes military advisor to say "You have (weak, avarage, strong) army compared to them"?

This usually don't make sense. Is it matter of defensive units?

Just the opposite. Offensive units are weighted more heavily when the military advisor compares your military to the AI's (1.5 offensive/1.0 defensive IIRC). Instead of building tons of defensive units in all your cities, build a mobile "strike force" of offensive units. Then, if you are attacked, you can counterattack. That's usually a better tactic than sitting around waiting for your cities to be attacked, anyway.

Or be the trader. If you trade to everyone, they are less likely to attack.
And on Regent, you could easily flip your cities back.

I'm usually agressor, so I have plenty of offensive units around. Maybe AI have few stronger units so it makes game avarage or strong.

keep your army at the border of your civ, not garrisoned in your capital, because the AI probably won't threaten your core until u loose your border cities.

If I get an early demand, I'm still in my initial expansion phase, for gold from a close AI with an ancient UU. I pay them.

If you're not ready for war, you should swallow your pride. Even if the demand comes from a civ that can't reach you, if they declare war on you, you'll have to buy alliances against them or worry about alliances against you.

I play on Emperor or Demigod and there you should really give in early on since they have the upper hand for a while. I always give them what they want until I can produce lots of swordmen and conquer them for good
