Blank screen after opening video

I just installed Civ III Complete and the opening video is playing fine but when I reach the main menu the screen goes blank although sound continues and the menu works.

I had this problem with Tropico as well and was able to find a shortcut key in order to change the resolution ???? (I'm not too sure actually, but I thought that somebody might be able to tell me...) It worked great. Is there a way to change the resolution in the preferences with this game as well even if somebody can tell me, say, "hit the down key 5 times, then enter then... " HAHA.

Here are some system specs. They should all be fine according to the requirements but they might help.

OS: Windows XP
Pentium 4, 1500 MHz
512 MB Ram
VID: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 44o
Approx. total Memory: 128 MB

Nothing is wrong with the sound, so I'll spare myself the bother of typing that.

.. and yes, my drivers are updated and I do have direct X 9.0 ... All of that should be OK. And I have tried changing my computers resolution as well as the resolution to start the game as well..
