I've been a CivFanatic since '92. I have yet to try Civ III but its coming in the mail. Civ & Civ II are great but sadly I've been finding that playing out a full game of Civ II (especially with the AI) has become quite tedious.

I find the space race too easy and not very exciting. I prefer to conquer everyone but it is such a tedious and time consuming process, especially at the higher levels. All that time and effort and you don't even get to see a replay like they had in Civ I. :(

I'm looking forward to playing Civ III but am a bit wary, more than half the people I've spoken to prefer Civ II and they say the game is very slow...

My favorite aspect of Civ II is the multiplayer aspect but it takes forever!!! Especially with three or four players, forget about it!

One more gripe... I find one of the quickest way to get strong, against AI or human, is to build tons of cities as quick as possible. But micromanaging is such a pain in the a$$, marketplace here, pikeman here, caravan (I hate the whole caravan process) here, ahhhhh!!!

Still, Civ II is a great game, I just think I need a break from it...
Still, if anyone can rally four of five good players for a super long-haul multiplayer game to the finish, I would be down for that 100%!!

Take it easy all!

I agree that Civ2 gets boring in the end, I hardly ever finish my games. But again there is no alternative to Civ2. Civ3 was a disappointment.

If you think Civ2 is tedious just wait till you start commanding hoardes of workers in Civ3.Or when you have make contact every turn just to see where the ais are at in development for tech brokering....argh.Tedious with a capitol T.

Narz, there are alternatives to playing a long Civ2 game, like OCC, Succession games, Democracy, scenarios, and special rules like date cutoffs, etc. Nothing is a perfect option... meaning if you change X then Y will be altered, but there are indeed options :).

hahahahaha    :rotfl:

And I thought it was just me that thought that those aspects were tedious in Civ3. While I have only completed one game of Civ3 (I won by domination), I did wonder while I was playing, "Just what am I supposed to do with all of the dozens of workers that I have?" and "Why can't I just pull up a screen to see my intelligence report? Why do I have to see Catherine's ugly mug?"

Also, if you wipe everyone else out, Narz :ar15: , your game will end much faster! :D

Someone in the forums has a signature that says "Civ2 - A superior game". If he hadn't written that, I would've been inclined to write it myself. :goodjob:

One thing I've been doing to make my games a bit less drawn out is to build fewer cities. I think 5 is a good number, it creates more of a challange for yourself. Sure its not great for the Civ score, but screw that, I was never big into counting points anyway. I think the 5 city rule is also a good one to follow for multiplayer games so you're not waiting 6 minutes for the guy to figure out what cities his 17 caravans should head to. Of course, if you conquer a sixth or seventh or sixteenth city thats fine. By building only five though you can really focus more and not have to micromanage, it also gives the AI a bit more of a chance.

I agree completely. I play mostly scenarios now, and haven't finished a full Civ2 game in weeks. If you want to change it up, though, try changing graphics. Just download some sets, do some cutting and pasting, and your old Civ has a new look! I've revamped my cities, units, terrain, and even the Rules.txt (not enough to unbalance the game, though) several times.

It all depends on what you like and want to get out of the game. Being a WW II buff, I don't really get into the game until I get tanks, planes, and spies. I try to get 20-40+ good cities and let the AI develop as it pleases until Howitizers arrive, and then just go on a rampage to overrun the world.
