blid03 - watch your borders

Erm...she won't have war chariots if you hit her fast.

Take the Barb City, Axe up and launch a speedy offensive. All you have to do is survive, and a few Axes/Arches should allow you to get some room. which is all you really want anyway.

The only problem is taking a barb city with archers. To aquire metals we need metals, or horses, and both are in short supply.

IHT : switch capital to work the mine
Cancel all goto orders. It is SG protocol that no go-to orders should be left between turnsets. This would let the player have control over what's happening.
I move the settler out of capital towards the copper site. I would settle next to the lake. Our financial trait would make that city less crappy than for non financial civs. Waiting for IW is indeed too long.
Our gold city would loose the rice tile quickly and in a some 20ish turns, it would be condemned to flip if no culture is built
switch research to writing

I found our new city

01.jpg

I ordered a worker in the capital and whipped it next turn. Overflow went into an archer

The new built archer gets combat I and kills barb archer on cow tile. He gets back to capital

Uppsala finished the worker and starts a monument. Worker goes immediately to hook the gold and then roaded it

Here's situation next capital :

02.jpg

two axes are threatening us. One west is probably on road pillaging duty, the other I'm not sure of its intentions. We get an archer close who can get shock promotion. Combined with forest cover, he would probably kill the axe on defense. The worker there has prefarmed and preroaded the rice tile. I suggest not to finish this unless we get rid of the axe so he don't pillage that again. We can preroad tile 1W of rice for example

A spear is in queue and one turn from completion (that was a warrior converted to spear after copper was connected). An axe is being built now. We can let this one finish naturally, then double whip a couple axe (don't whip units for 1 pop unless for urgence, it is big waste). Depending on the egyptian dyes city defenses, we may be able to take it using 4 axes and a spear. We need to pillage that horses tiles, hoping that it's the only one Hatty possesses.

In Uppsala, a worker just finished roading the gold. The other is chopping a forest to accelerate the monument.

03.jpg

Writing is due next turn so we can open borders with Hatty. This would connect Uppsalla, gives us some trade routes with Hatty and lets us check on her defenses, also more happiness in the capital. IMO, we should make the alternative road I pictured in my shot. This way, Uppsala would remain connected after the war starts. An archer is positioned on the gold. We can get him back into Uppsala if Hatty gets its second border expansion to reduce the flipping odds

Alphabet next maybe ? We are a bit behind I guess and should try to trade for mathematics and iron working and some cheap techs like pottery using alphabet.

Okay, priorities seem to be to survive the barbs, get alphabet and an army together.

Would it be a good idea to train some axes on that barb city to the south? (Given that they get decent odds, of course.)

Attacking the barb city would probably cost us an axe or two but it can be worth it. This would give us another city to train units and hopefully a couple CRII axes.
It would be cool if you can get one of our archers to 10 xp (one of them is already 7 IIRC), training on those barbies

Who is our first target? We are getting pretty close to compulsive warmongering. Hatty? If so the frist thing we need to do is disconnect her horsies and pray she doesn't have another source. I like going after her to releive our cultural squeeze, and to hook up her horses for ourselves.

Crappy Terrain+Getting Squeezed+Emp+Varrient = early war to get some decent land going. We need to get Math/(Finish Mason)/Const and get cats up ASAP. It will probably be worth it to go with Alpha first though.

Writing came in on the first turn. I picked alphabet for next tech and signed open borders with everyone. Those foreign trade routes cut the research time by three turns!

Watch&

The western barb axe moved towards Nidaros and made me whip an axe. My concern proved unnecessary however, when Thor's chosen beat the barbarians easily. Those archers also creamed the other horde of savages, but unfortunately didn't earn enough xp for a promotion. The barbs also pillaged our mine.

The southern barb city was taken with the loss of one, unpromoted axe. A worker is currently building a road to the city.

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

We may want to think about capturing the barb city to the southeast of Carib.

I whipped an axe in Haithabu when it grew to size two. It can be whipped immediatly when it grows again.

Nidaros built a couple of axes and a spear. I had the workers mine the plains hill and the city is now growing slowly, as it's at its happy cap.

Uppsala finished the monument and is building a barracks. Its borders will pop in two turns and a pair of workers is ready to pasture the cows. I also built the war-time route to the city.

I didn't remember to send a scout to spy on Hatty's defences. Fortunately there is still time. I think we must keep the war quite limited, as our finances have sunken down to 50%. Are we aiming for the two cities next to Uppsala?

Also, we should watch Catherine closely. (No, not in that way, you perverts.) The russian has built the Great wall and the Pyramids and there seems to be some good land to the east. She may quickly beome a runaway.

The save is here.

Good job Stuge

Now let's go take down Hatty. We can whip a couple axes from the capital (remember not to go above 4 hammers by switching off a hill on first round to be able to whip 2 pops). I would queue the spear to save units cost and maybe put some hammers into a library if you think the timing is not right. Like waiting for Haithabu to grow to whip its axe or something. In fact, this guy can come as reinforcement from the south later

Watch out Carib, it is building nothing. As for Uppsala, IMO it is better to work the gold and try to grow once the cows are hooked

Yes, taking two cities from Hatty should be enough as a start. As long as she doesn't play cultural bitcch with another city

Got it, I'll play tomorrow so I can give it my full attention... looks like a juicy turn set to come!

NOTE: Just posting my notes straight up to get the game out there - Screenies to follow soonish (placeholders in there now)

700 BC (IH) - All's quite now, the only sign of the previous regime’s barb incursions is an Axeman Tyr – wounded but itching for blood. Started Carib on another archer.

685 BC (1) – Border pop in Upps. Spear>>>Axe in Nidaros. Rework the units around Upps to get a look at Hatty’s defenses:

(2x Archer and Spear in Elephantine and 1 Arch 1 Spear in Alex)

Pretty meager so far, no axes or war chariots yet – looks like the workers are just putting the finishing touches on the pasture for horses. We need to take advantage of this and snipe those two cities before bringing the fight to any more barbs. Priority one is taking out those horses so she can’t get Chariots, then we can pick off the cities. I’ll keep an eye on the situation and see if how things develop. When I have 4-6 offensive units in the area I will declare and attack cities when I have the numbers.

670 BC (2) – Continue to move troops towards the soon to be Egyptian front.

655 BC (3) – Run out of cash so I have to cut our economy down to 40% to get back into the green. Since we won’t be getting Alpha in time for our offensive we won’t be able to trade with Hatty and possibly Ask or Kubla, but we should be able to get decent value out of it from the remaining civs.

640 BC (4) – Refuse a deal from Hatty for Pigs for our Cows. Upps gets some of the southern territory back under our control including the Rice farm. With the cows and rice Upps just turned into a real city. It also allows a two hop to Elephantine, which now only has two defenders.

625 BC (5) – Louis seems to know which way the wind is blowing!

(Cancle Deal with Hatty Pic)

We lose our scouts, but it saves us from going negative with a potential ally.

610 BC (6) – Axe->Axe in Nidaros. Amassing troops at Hatty’s border.

595 BC (7) – Well looky here!

(Augustus settles to the east of Carib)

So we are just one border pop away from mandatory war! Nice timing Augustus, and he drew some fire from the local Barbs as well. Whip Axe at Hait. Knock another 10% off of our Science rate.

580 BC (8) – Bud spreads to Nid. See a Kubla Chariot/Archer/Settler Stack near Alex. Not sure of their intended destination, but its probably some of that unsettled space near our borders… we might have to take on Askoa and Hatty soon.

565 BC (9) – The storm is gathering, we now have 5 troops ready to move in on Hatty, once I can two pop whip at Nid and an Axe from the south arrives it will be clobbering time.

550 BC (10) – Issy suggests we not let those Mongols run rampant through out territory, I agree and evict the suckers back to Hattyland - soon to be the unhappiest place on earth. We have squarely pissed off the Hindu block (expect Asoka, the peaceloving hippy).

535 BC (11) – The storm gathers… Someone builds the Great Lighthouse?!?

520 BC (12) – Two pop whip axes in Nid.

505 BC (13) – IT IS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG! Declare war on the Hatted one as dictated by Augustus’s border smooching. Take an unsuspecting worker with an Axe of opportunity and move a stack of 3 Axes 2 Spear to take out Elephantine. Have a few more axes on the way to bat cleanup.

495 BC (14) – Busiest…. Turn…. Ever.

Alphabet is up!

Louis = Alpha for Iron Working and Meditation
Asoka = Alpha for Math
Isabella = Alpha for Poly, Pottery, and Masonry

Start work on construction.

Which reveals desert Iron, and notice something else there?

(Pic of iron between Nid and Upps and Kubla settling on our border)

We have to declare on another civ! All in due time. We have some other business to attend to first. We take Elephantine with the loss of an axe. I set up an Axe and Spear in Elephant to guard and move the remaining troops down south to pick up Alexanderia.

Move the tax rate up to a respectable 60%.

Declare war on Kubla, since he poses the lesser threat to us of our possible neighbors at this time (dispite having Chariots), and he settled in a decent place too. And he’s already pissed at us.

475 BC (15) – Trade Math to Isabella for Sailing and Priesthood. Start Temple in Nid and Libraries elsewhere. I think we need to build while defending at the moment, and we have a good deal of units for the time being. Greyfox you can change these at your discretion. The stack has moved on to Alexanderia, and are ready to roll it up.

Sorry about the delay, my dance card should be less full from now on, and this was a pretty eventful turnset that needed my full attention (I’m sure I still screwed something up!). If I knew it was going to take this long I would of passed days ago...

Nice work Woe
Fox is up
Not sure about the temple in capital. I'd rather have a lib and couple scientists
That mongol city would steal our iron soon. We need to take it even if it sucks. Also if you can bribe someone to help us in wars, it would be nice. Easier said than done, I know :)

I decided not to take that Egypt city. We simply couldn't afford it. Instead, what we should do is to get rid of the Mongolia city, and sign peace within our variant. So I pulled out the forces there, to address some mongolia archer + chariot up north.

I swapped capitol to Library ... I think we do need temple for happiness issues, but seeing since AC has Monarchy, I think we can it from him and revolt to HR. That will be more useful then temple.

I also swapped Uppsala to spear .. we need more spear since KK is bring chariots. Plus I suspect Egypt will soon have horses.

Cathy came asking for help.

blid3-BC0445-cathy-ask.jpg

I am sorry, sweetie, come again tonight and maybe I will change my mind. What, you are booked all the way to next christmas? Too bad then!

Meanwhile, we enlist the help of the most unlikely ally:

blid3-BC0445-barb-help.jpg

Barbie Doll!

The worst fear materialised -- Hatty has chariots despite my pillaging of the pasture. I am so glad I decided to swap uppsala to a spear.

blid3-BC0400-warchariot.jpg

Well, the barbbie ally died at the hands of Hatty archer ... so we have to do it ourselves ... and pesto: we no longer share border with Mongolia at the cost of one axe:

blid3-BC0385-sam.jpg

But KK still refuse to talk.

Hmmm, okay, I will find someone willing to talk:

blid3-BC0385-ac-trade.jpg

Augutus finally no longer red out Monarchy, so I got him a deal (he doesn't want to trade Calendar). This is followed by a revolt to HR.

Then Loius decides to further help our happiness:

blid3-BC0370-louis-trade.jpg

Now, some bad news:

blid3-BC0340-trouble.jpg

No, I am not talking the barbs. I am referring to the potential-border-sharing- resulting-in-needing-to-declare-on-someone thingy

I am again so glad I decided to turn Cathy down earlier on. I seems to have premonition powers :smug:

KK finally is willing to talk, here is his offer:

blid3-BC0340-KK-offer.jpg

I suggest we take it .. we need the money. We are so close to having our units go on strike ...

I revisited Hatty's city ... it is now better defended. Sorry, opportunity is close. I suggest we pillage the cottage while waiting for swords or cats.

blid3-BC0340-hatty.jpg

Oh, BTW, you may consider it a smoke, but I decided to build a cottage on the banana. We really needed money.

I agree, you got some elightened premonitions there Fox :)

We ended up with a couple of crappy cities. We need financing badly here. I would focus on growing and using those lakes for a while. Hire scientists asap, with a couple in the capital to get the first scientist quickly. I hope we would be able to get philo with our first scientist and pop taoism

We should take that peace treaty with the mongols and use the existing army to defend/pillage egypt territory. Hatty is still number 2 and we need to cripple her since we'll probably be at war till she dies (or we do)

I'd send one of those trilplet workers to help cottage south. Carib can have one cottage south of the banana and get immediate 3 gold

Catherine is backwards. Don't trade with her, she would probably be our next victim. It is awkward to be fighting two civs on two different sides but a weak opponent should give us breath enough to work on our economy.
