First post! Nice forum !

I've started a game with one of my friend and right now we got a lot of privateers on all ennemy AI coast cities doing blockades.

For some reason, the AI doesn't really try to destroy our privateers ; he simply take all is naval forces and put them on some blockaded tiles, in sleep mode.

My question is : by doing this, is the AI take control back of the tile for his city where we are doing the blockades?

Regards,

Sylvain Giroux.

Welcome to the Forums sylvaing.

The AI will very soon come after you with Caravels and when he gets Frigates, break off and head for your home ports.

What difficulty level are you playing? In my games, as soon as I move a Privateer to blockade a city, that city stops whatever it was building and spams naval units.

I use two Privateers, one to blockade, one to pillage and fight.

Thank you!

We are playing Monarch, we got a stack of minimum 3 Privateers on each tiles we blockades them.

So do you know if they take control back of their tiles where they stack Caravels on?

They will take back control if they have at least one unit where you were...if that's what you're asking. And as 49er mentioned above, they WILL be out for you soon. It just sounds like you caught a civ a little off balance.

I'm at job currently, I'll post a screenshot tonight of exactly what the situation is.

Yes, we were very early with our blockades. They will probably get out soon with better forces, but we got already 10-15 destroyers and we'll start a war in the next few turns.

Build your Privateers to 10XP, sail them home and upgrade to Destroyers.
You can even put a GG (Great General) on a destroyer for a very powerful unit.
You should be able to get 1 or 2 GGs with your Privateers alone. :D

As said, this is the screenshot :

As you can see, there's a LOT of Green AI Carracks almost everywhere we do our blockades.

Is the AI take back control of the ressources, food, gold of those tiles for their cities when Carracks are standing on them, even if you do a blockade?

Yup! As you can see, our troops already got nice XP, we'll probably upgrade them soon to destroyers.

Yes you can.

Edit: Welcome to the forums though! :)

You are perfectly right, we did upgrade our privateers to destroyers.

btw, philx02 is the other guy I'm playing with. ;)

So nobody doesn't really know the response about the question right?

You did press the button Blockade right? Not just put them there and hit the space bar, because then they dont blockade

sry, just noticed the orange blockade range....in that case they should not have access to that resource anymore

You can find out by dumping a lot of your espionage budget into them until you can look in their city, and then you will see.

What I'm wondering is: why are you not smashing their ships as fast as you can? I had a game once where I wound up building about 60 Privateers and had most of the world blockaded. I got 3 GGs before I ever declared a war! They also seemed to help get me vassals, as a bunch of them begged me for lordship around the time it was becoming impossible to keep them all out there (dang Indians kept hunting them down with Frigate fleets).

Part of this rush to be vassals was definitely due to the economic hit they took. While I continued to get stronger, they didn't, so I got higher power ratios against them. I suspect another part of it was the kill ratio; even though they didn't "know" I was whacking their boats left and right, I think I still got scored up on the kill ratios, and that made them want to be my pets. Made sense, I suppose, since I promptly withdrew my Privateers from their waters.

I probably built more Privateers in that one game than all previous ones combined - I had a really good tech lead and beelined them.

I found that everyone else started beelining for Frigates once the skull and crossbones flew over their waters. Dang Indians got them early, so I didn't get to hit them hardly at all. And in the meantime, they built tons of Caravels and kept most of them safe in the cities, but wouldn't use them unless they had like a 10-to-1 advantage (and even then they were hesitant).

I wound up having to do a three-tiered system. One tier was pretty much there to blockade. The second hunted down anything it could find. The third made use of Medic promotions to heal the second tier. Both first and third tiers were needed to supplement the second when a battle went less-than-well or when there were a lot of boats begging for doom.

The Dutch seemed to be a good choice for this strategy. First, the Dutch do better with lots of water, not least of all because of Willem being Financial. Second, they need to beeline Astronomy for their UU, and while you're there, you may as well get Chemistry before beelining your UB. And though the AI doesn't build Privateers (yet), if they ever do, your UU probably won't get attacked by them (equal strength).

We were doing the best we could ; we had only about 10 privateers while they had about 40 Carracks. We were always destroying some of them each turn.

Now the war is started, and our destroyers are taking good care of those :mischief:

Man... I'm so glad the AI mass-producing Caravels for a lack of anything better is a thing of the past on my system. I remember default Civ4 finds the AI making Caravels add-naseum. Also the whole "upgrading Privateers to WWII destroyers"... wow... skipped a 100 years or more of naval evolution!

I almost forgot how much default Civ4 missed on naval battles... no renaissance war galleys, no ocean-going ironclads or coal-fired navies of the late 1800s, and no WWI fleets of dreadnoughts.

I fixed all that in case anyone is interested in the Wolfshanze Mod (see sig-line)... I promise the AI will find something better to come at you with then Caravels, and that you won't have to wait to upgrade your privateers until you reach WWII technology.
