Okay, first off: you have to be familiar with both of them in order to make a valid contribution to this thread.

I prefer Leonard, although Bob Dylan undeniably is a genius as well.

What do you guys think?

Neither is exactly one of my favourites, but I prefer Cohen over Dylan.

BTW, why didn't you make a poll?

They aren't necessarily competitive. Dylan's impact on the mainstream was certainly much more significant, but I admire Cohen's independance from the leeches in the music industry.

dylan has better songs and cohen has also a tendency to "overproduce" his albums.

Hmmmm, do I prefer the monotonous droning whiner or the monotonous droning whiner. :hmm:

I'll go with Cohen since he's from Canada. Well, Montréal is close enough :D

Dylan. Some of his stuff is true genius. Cohen is just painful drivel posing as art.

R.III

Dylan, because I think he is the greatest ever. I like Cohen; he has a very unique voice and great lyrics, but his music is really cheesy. Cohen uses WAY too much synthesizer.

how about Dylan's independence from not only the leeches in the music industry but from EVERYONE including HIS FANS? I mean, the guy changed styles so much and made lots of albums he knew his old fans would hate, but made the albums anyway just because he wanted to. And Dylan has always defended his albums equally, from the ones everyone loves (Blood on the Tracks/Blonde on Blonde/etc.) to the ones everyone hates (Self Portrait/Down in the Groove) or doesnt care about (Empire Burlesque/New Morning).

Kurtz - Dylan is my favorite musician of all time, so you don't have to sell me on his virtues. I think he's a first-class contrarian, and that's rare in the industry. But Cohen had the balls to tell Phil Spector where to get off, and that's impressive. I don't like Cohen's music nearly as much.

Point well taken. Cohen rejected Phil Spector? I never heard of that, but that is pretty impressive.

His album 'Death of a Ladies' Man' was co-produced with Spector until things got so bad, Cohen stormed off with it half-finished. Spector kept insisting on the 'wall of sound' feel.

Dylan. He's just great. I think that alot of his stuff is just genius. He writes great, even if I can't understand him sometimes.

Dylan.

Cohen merely drones on and on and on about Joan D'Arc and fire...

Dylan.
