Bombing out

Hi ppl

Okay, maybe this problems been adressed, I don't know. But i'm gonna ask anyhow.

I play CIV4 (with the 1.09 patch) for say +- and hour or more and then all of a sudden it bombs out, leaving me in a windows shell that's set @ 4bit graphics.

The only way to return to normal is to reboot.

K - so the reasons that went thru my head were like this:

1.) My CPU is overheating - it's summer in SA and it gets up to 36c - 40c here
- But I dont think it's a prob - im running p4 3.0ghz HT enabled that according to intel, and even with the 3d rocket fan on it runs around 60c when running hot.

2.) My Graphic card is overheating - It's an ASUS Nvidea GeForce 6600 pci-x
with silent pipe cooling - BUT no other games that are intensive do the
same.

3.) Memory? I don't think so, but mostly it seems the bombing happens when I'm scrolling around in the fog of war area really fast. But then again that could just be my luck that I was doing that when it happened because it DID happen once when i was entering city view.

4.) Software. I think it's most probably this. But what, I am downloading the
newest patch update for CIV4. Plus at home I'll start checkin for graphic driver updates.

Have any of you come across the same thing? Please lemme know - Oh and Happy New Years guys, may all the best thing hit you flat in the face!

Greetings from sunny SA!

Highly likely the lack of Patch V1.52 - the game had significant issues prior to V1.52 - many of those symptoms you described. Should be ok on the setup post Patch V1.52, if not please post your dxdiag so we can have a look.

Civ IV is a true 3D game from bottom up - not just some look-a-like eye candy, it places a heavy load on hardware, especially graphics cards. You need to watch that carefully where you are. Try reducing some grahics options in the card a little to reduce the load.

I would also think ahead to summer (spent 6 months out there, am aware of the environment issues you have depending on your air-con availability), may want to think about extra cooling, even water cooling - bit off the wall, but dont dismiss it for your summer ....
