For anyone playing (or going to play) BOTM 08:

It's come to our attention that due to some error (we suspect a bug in the worldbuilder editor), this game will cut off in 1910AD, NOT the usual 2050AD. Although it's an epic speed game, it has been set to have only 500 turns (epic BtS normally has 750 turns). This means that if you are still playing in 1910AD, the game will automatically award a time victory (or loss) - and you will need to submit the game at that point rather than playing on.

I'm sorry about this. At this stage, with the game already out and being played (and in some cases, already submitted), it's not really possible for us to change the game files so if you are playing, then you should carry on your game as normal, but be aware of the earlier game finishing date.

(And thanks to Ronnie1 for bringing the issue to our attention).

What did I tell you? Now THAT is an innovative new challenge!

...Or else maybe it is just Murphy's Law kicking in after we said so many nice things about DynamicSpirit in the other thread! (Wouldn't want him to get too proud of himself anyway.) ;)

Wow. Not a small glitch there! Glad I checked here before continueing.

Lol, does this mean we get a botm9 quicker? sorry, but I'm greedy... :)

Funny, I was just thinking that what with the extra checks we'll need to do to prevent this happening again, now that we know that editing with worldbuilder can theoretically cause this bug if we don't guard against it, we might need to postpone BOTM 09 a bit. Not too long, I think until 2015 ought to be enough..

Eek. This is going to throw a MAJOR wrench in my standard emperor-level strategy of "hanging in there" early & "clawing my way back into the race" over time. As resident BOTM cow herder, only with difficulty can I finish Monarch games by 1910! :help:

I actually did not notice until suddenly "100 turns left" popped up.

Worst thing is that it was actually my first emperor game and I believe It went quite well but for the fact that I was aiming at a cultural victory ...... (3 cities at 50K in 1910...)

oh well next time, first round : check the victory conditions, whatever the game !!!

I noticed this. - Thought it was something to do with Emperor/epic which I dont normally play....It did give me a momentary panic as I reached for my calculator to see if I could achieve a Cultural victory before time ran out.

Thanks for pointing out the error.

Just as a little reminder to everyone, normal spoiler rules do apply. I posted about this issue outside of the spoilers because it was clearly an error in the game setup that I felt people needed to know about, ideally before they started playing. It's fine to comment in any (reasonable :) ) way you wish about the error in this thread, but discussion of what happened in your game should be confined to the normal spoilers.

(This isn't aimed at anyone in particular btw, it's just I can see the general trend of this discussion heading towards the boundary of being spoiler-ish and I want to catch it before it crosses it...)

I'm a newcomer to the XOTMs (though I'm a die-hard civ fan since the days of civII), and I am participating for the first time in this BOTM. Perhaps here is not the appropriate place to ask this question, but when do spoiler threads generally start? I'm itching to hear how other people's games are going and to learn some strategy. :groucho:

The first spoiler is usually around the end of the month so it should be coming up in the next week or so.

Good luck.

I could put this in pre-game discussion, but due to the glitch I thought more appropriate here...
What the heck kind of victory will others be going for with the game limited to 1910? I'm at a loss at what to head for at Emperer level in BtS; All the normal strategies are marginal... :p

What do others think will work? (Nothing revealing about the game only hypothetical)

Thanks morpheus, I'll look forward to it. Good luck to all!

In anyone's past experience (without referencing this particular game, of course), is it reasonable to expect the AI to launch the ship before 1910 on Emperor? Since this is my first Emperor game, I can't really say.

My experience says that in a generic emperor game, if you let one AI run get far ahead of all the others then 1910 space is likely. If its a close race between 3-4 civs, it usually takes longer. You'd be better off asking if YOU can get to space in 1910.:mischief:

In GOTM9 we played an Emperor game as HC / continents, where the AI launched before 1910 AD in several games. You can browse the result here.
