BOTM 77 Final Spoiler

Wow, didn't expect this kind of extensive answer :)

I understand that on Noble, Prince and maybe Monarch one can easily win sooner or later without much struggle. But you words "mindless AI but-wipping, so my game involves no finess, and no real planning..." made me think that you didn't stop even for a minute at some point in game to think about what to build/settle/research/attack/improve next. So I wondered if you at least try to do the basics that you listed right.

From your explanation I understand that you do that but if it comes to you automatically then you don't really have to think about it. I'm still at a level where I stop almost every turn for a minute or two to think if I'm doing the basics right and what to do next..

May as well add my write-up:
I tried to go for fast domination or conquest and very quickly found out how "easy" it is. After capturing Washington and some useless cities from Gilgamesh I had to lower science to 10% and even was able to fall back in research... On Noble...

After fixing economy and research (about 2000 years later ) I attacked the rest of AIs, took over the Old World, settled some islands and milked my way to 2050 AD barely avoiding domination and 3x50k.
