Game Details:

This month you will lead the Ethiopians in this Renaissance start game.

Game settings:
Civilization: Ethiopia
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Prince
Map: Fractal
Mapsize: Standard
World wrap: Cylindrical
Starting Era: Renaissance
Speed: Normal
Options: No Random Events
Victory Conditions: All enabled

Zara Yaqob:
Zara Yaqob is Creative and Organized and the Ethiopians start with Hunting and Mining. The Creative trait gives +2 culture/turn in each city and double production speed of Library, Theater and Colosseum. Organized gives -50% civic upkeep and double production speed of Lighthouse, Factory and Courthouse.

Unique unit: Oromo Warrior(replaces Musketman)
The Oromo Warrior has one first strike, is immune to first strikes and starts with both Drill I and Drill II. It requires Gunpowder to build.

Unique building: Stele(replaces Monument)
The Stele provides +1 culture per turn and a +25% bonus to culture in the city in which it is built. It requires Mysticism to build and becomes obsolete by Astronomy.

Adventurer Class bonuses:
Game will be played on Noble level. Note that AI starting units still match Prince level.

Challenger Class Equalizers:
Game will be played on Monarch level, but is still scored as if it were a Prince game. Note that AI starting units still match Prince level.

To Enter the Competition:

This competition will open at 00:01 on 17 July 2010, server local time (UTC-6:00). From that date and time, you'll be able to get your chosen starting save >>>here<<<.

Submit the save after your victory (or defeat) here, by 17 August 2010.

Civ version

This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Warlords or vanilla Civ), patched to version 3.19. It must also be played with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.003. Note that for game security reasons this BUFFY mod version requires you to be logged in with an account that has admin privileges when you are playing for your game to be a valid entry to the GOTM competition. You'll see a warning dialog if you attempt to start a session without appropriate privileges.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Please do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

First non-Ancient start in XOTMs iirc. Many fast conquests I expect ))

The straightforward way is go to cuirassiers and killemall.

I haven't played a non-ancient start forever....

I'm sure I will still grind out Space, Diplo or Culture.
The other option is of course losing horribly, but I don't think this will happen on Prince. fingers-crossed

With renaissance starts, it's much better to capture enemy cities than building your own because settlers are more expensive than normal. I think I'll go for a fast space ship with the challenger save. BOTM 24 had similar settings so hopefully I can post a faster date this time.

Settle in place. Worker pastures pigs. Then chops second worker.
Explorer SW, Longbow NW, Longbow SE, 2nd settler SE (maybe settle on plains hill if nothing better...).
Beeline gunpowder.

I've been waiting for this thread; now I need to finish BOTM31.

Y'all remember to select your civics before settling - maybe save some anarchy.

Questions about our UB, UU:

Is the Stele worth building? We are creative, so we don't need the culture bonus.
Does it still provide 25% culture bonus post astronomy?

Can someone expound on the vitues of the oromo?

Stele will not produce 25% culture past astronomy. It WILL produce its base culture though.

The Oromo can make for fun stuff if you give it drill 4 and upgrade to a rifle. Just remember that certain units ignore first strikes.

Test Game for you to try opening moves and get used to advanced start.

My worker will explore one turn as well as the others since resources can be spotted right away... need the leg up before settling. :D

Not enough action in this thread. Guess BOMT24 covered it all.
I'm thinking about sending both settlers off in different directions to find better city spots.

I expect to settle one city in place and have the worker make improvements with the chops going into a second worker then into a few useful buildings. One longbow to stay close and do a little exploring. The other longbow and settler will march to find a better site. Th explorer will range far and wide.

^Settling in place we can't buy levees, which may not be too far away in an advanced start games (unless going for a fast conquest?). S or SE looks ok by me.

BOTM24 was a Renaissance start, playing Lincoln. Here's the links to the threads from that game. There is discussion about how Renaissance starts work.

Results and congratulations thread is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=347600&highlight=BOTM+Results+Congratulations

I was thinking of trying culture again. bbp, you up for another culture challenge? I'm sure I won't be much of an opponent but it will be fun.

In BOTM 24 there were only a few culture games.
