Brain chip reads man's thoughts

Probably scared by the fact that the title said "Brain chip reads man's thoughts" when that really isn't what's happening. It's simply locating areas in the brain which are active when certain activities are done and inserting electrodes on those areas in order to activate machinary or software designed to emulate said action.

We already have them. They are called "missles".

You do need to trigger a missile. Once it's in flight you don't really have to worry about it. Off hand I can't think of any missiles that don't need human intervention to fire. Most involve a trigger of some sort.

This really received a lot of replies that I wouldn't have predicted! :D

Interesting reading throughout - I don't particularly claim to understand people's fears.... but fears are often irrational anyway.

Thanks for all the responses though! :)

What is it with all the Luddism in this thread?
Don't brush it all off with single claim of luddism.

There are reasonable fear included to the idea of hampering one's brain.

Saying that people who are sceptical of the applications of such projects shouldn't be considered just be against progress itself.
I really don't get it..
Well it has become obvious to me after few other discussions that you don't see any possibility of technology being harmful.

Of course, there cannot be nothing wrong with "progress" since the term itself already contains "positive" value position.

What comes to the issue itself, it has it surely has it's benefits, doubts and threats. This kind of project more than many other forms of technology.

Nobody's forcing you to do anything with your brain C~G. As it stands, this technology promises to make life easier for people who are paralyzed or otherwise crippled. Can you imagine the improvement in quality of life for someone who has been paralyzed from the neck down if they can start controlling things via remote and/or interfacing with computers more easily to read and write books and surf the internet?

If you don't think that's worth developing then you are indeed a Luddite and I have nothing to discuss with you.

What's a 1984 type situation?

Spoiler :

Ironically, you'll never hear the people who are "scared of 1984" complain about radio and television anymore (although I'm sure they did, back when they were new technologies) even though those are also essential tools of totalitarianism. Not to mention guns, trucks and paper. But there you go :crazyeye:
