Brain chip reads man's thoughts

People not voting for the "Mind Control Party"?

They seem to not give a rats ass about privacy as long as they feel nice and secure.

Put the chips in them, first.

I think that politicians should have to publicise their lives based on how much power they have. I wouldn't mind if every citizen could listen in on the Prime Ministers 16 hours a day and moniter a lie-detector strapped to him, too.

Ha, ha, good point!

In a democracy the mind-control chips would be stuck in the politicians heads. That should make them behave for once :)

That's a good idea. Mandatory mind readers for all politicians!

I do think that politicians shoudl have lie detectors on them.

Would this mean porn pop-ups every seven seconds?

Porn popups inside your head every 7 seconds? I'm sure that would be nothing new to a lot of guys :)

I was thinking the other way around... thought surfing in an internet café could be a dicy endevour.

Soon we'll even have telepathy technology. Communicate with others on the other side of the planet via radio signals generated by machines in the brain.

In fact why not go the whole way, transform human beings into machines?

When you imagine yourself doing something, there are natural brain filters that prevent you from actively doing that thing. This includes filtering out you speaking what you're thinking. That's one danger, that this technology won't be able to sort out what the person wants to do from merely what they're entertaining in their minds.

.
This is why the title is a little misleading. The brain chip isn't exactly reading the man's thoughts but the brain learn to commutate with the chip as it does when it tells your arm to move. The arm itself doesn't read your thoughts about punching someone then act but just waits for a signal.

Remember the article a few years ago where they wired a chimp's brain to a computer so it could read what parts of the brain is firing when the chimp is moving the controller to move an mechanical arm. I believe it was for two days they had the controller actually hooked up so the computer could recognize a pattern. After that, they disconnect the controller and found the computer could recognize the pattern to move the mechanical arm. The huge surprise was after 6 hours the chimps drop the controller and continue to move the arm yet not as good at first. Thus the chimp brain learn to how commutate to the computer not only without a controller but also without actually moving it's natural arm as well.

So... hooking an input/output and/or feedback system into the brain leads to the brain adapting to interface with that system?

Old news.

we will probably be able to cure injuries like his long before this is ever perfected. the research and use of this technology until then will prove most beneficial for some war effort in the future I am sure.

Computers are also very useful in war efforts.

What is it with all the Luddism in this thread? Is it because the device is something you put in your brain? Are you all scared for your brains?

I really don't get it..
