Is there a way to build bridges between two land masses that are seperated by only 1 square? Now I place a transport and move units that way. I think its stupid that one of the advances is bridge building, but you cant build bridges in the game.

You build the bride across rivers. You could do a ship bridge, requiring multiple boats. But I am pretty sure you cannot build on the ocean.

In Civ1 I put a Settler on a boat and he could build road and railroad while on the boat. A railroad was successfully built over open ocean. But sadly, units could not use it.

In Civ2 I've not attempted to do the same, but I don't think it's possible.

Indeed bridges are for rivers only, not over ocean. This is very realistic. Bridges in real life that are not over rivers are over narrow bodies of water. In civ2 an ocean tile is a rather large body of water. Look at the large map of earth: Persian Gulf is one tile wide in many spots, so is the English channel. If two bodies of land share a corner and are otherwise surrounded by water you can go from one to the other without a bridge and ships can go across as well.

In Civ1, you could indeed build roads and railroads over water as Sir Lancelot mentioned. They would give you the terrain benefit (extra resources) but no unit could step on them. That was an oversight and has been corrected in Civ2.

You cannot build bridge with standard rules.

But you can edit Rules.txt: allow engineers(must be on a boat) to change ocean into another tile (swamp for exemple). That is just advanced terraforming :)

And it is not unrealistic, man has been doing that for decades. I think it's far more common to make land of shallow bodies of sea than making hills and plains of mountains. Actually I know of no example where mountains was transformed to hillls, plains or grassland in real life.
