AD 800: In the west Charlemagne (leader of the Franks) supported Pope Leo III in his efforts to rid Italy of babarian inavaders. The Pope invited Charlemagne to Rome and The Pope crowned Charlemagne the first ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, rejecting the empire in the East
AD 1054: Christian church in Constantinople breaks with the church in Rome.
AD 1071: Seljuk Turks defeat Byzantine army at Manzikert.
AD 1204: Crusaders sack Constantinople.
