Has there ever been a push for British judges and barristers to ditch the wigs? Why do they still use them? Are they used in any of the commonwealth countries?

I think (this may not be so) that wigs started being used in France, to signify nobility and (ehm) make all nobles look more refined, regardless of having their own hair or not (?).
They are supposed to symbolize power and authority.
Not sure if that is the actual start (french nobility etc), but it is certainly the case that in Britain (and not just there) politicians did use to wear wigs often. And bald ones (eg the Hague) were ridiculed for that trait.
