I like most of Civ IV wonders, but from a worldwide point of view I believe Broadway makes a very lousy wonder.

I am ok with Rock'n'Roll. Hollywood is a wonder of international impact. But... Broadway? It's relevant only in the USA (and maybe westen Europe), it is ridiculous it has the same in-game impact as Hollywood or Rock'n'roll. Maybe it would do a fine National Wonder, but as a Unique Wonder, is sucks big time!

Then what would you suggest as its replacement? All of the wonders in Civ4 can be endlessly disputed, and there will always be someone who doesn't agree on the global impact of that and that "wonder".

Maybe the World Cup of soccer? ;) I know it's virtually unknown in the USA, but it rocks the rest of the world...

Seriously now, I think the Olympics have more of a worldwide appeal an the same 'happiness' result (that can be multiplied by radio)...

I thought it was a pretty cool idea for a wonder. Plays have been common through out all of history and broadway is probably the most famous location for shows.

Now who's myopic?

Well, the Cup is important to 100+ countries, except 1. Broadway is important to 1 country, and ignored on 100+. As far as World Wonders are concerned, the World Cup beats Broadway hands down, anyday...

But I would vote on the Olympics, anyway...

So you build Broadway and get 5 hit musicals. Will somebody please tell me, politely, what to do with them ? Similarly for the other 'hits', of course. My only encounter with these wonders has been that once I was offered one hit in exchange for one gold resource, a deal which I felt was not to my advantage.

World cup would be great! You could get a golden age for one round in a different city every 4 turns.

GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!

Well there is the Colosseum...

agreed but considering the time when you can build them its like they are more for gladiators than they are for football. granted I assume as the time line continues in the game they would take on new events. Thinking about it, frankly I don't care, but when you consider the cultural impact of sports IE soccor for the world and football for the USA it seems that they could be implimented into the tech tree creating either a national wonder like say the nfl, mlb, or world cup.... but the world cup is more of a world wonder than just national.... or a new building like the colosseum but with a title of sports arena generating both revenue and culture for the city. I dunno so many possibilities....

Well as cold as it sounds I would classify gladiators in the arena as sport, just real tough hard hitting games :) With that said yes sports are big in certain parts of the world and very big in the US but how much of a world impact have they realy had? I suppose they do help with happeness but then we get back to the colosseum, sports have to have some kind of local appeal for international sports to effect them. That is why the World Cup is not so big in the US, not a lot of local appeal.

'Broadway' is symbolic of any famous theater region around the world. It is a game name for an area that produces an abundance of live storytelling style entertainment, i.e. ancient Greek plays in Athens, opera in Vienna, etc. As people traveled to the area to see the show, rather than having the show come to them at their local theater, the happiness generated by the 'Broadway' spreads to other areas often far from the central location itself.

Sports are a totally different thing than storytelling.

Then as the orignal poster ask why is it a world wonder and not a national wonder, Broadway is NOT unique to the world.

I think the World Cup or the Olympics would be fun wonders, but part of the problem there is that they rotate to different countries, whereas in this game the country that builds the wonder keeps it.

Broadway is one of the weaker wonders, but I think they wanted another source of happiness in the late game, and its a pretty good complement to radio broadcasts, movies, and rock n' roll.

Edit: maybe they should have other happiness wonders for sports; like the inventor of soccer, baseball, and basketball gets happiness.

The 'Globe Theatre' is the national wonder version of the same thing that eliminates unhappiness in only one city. Nobody said Broadway is unique, but for gameplay purposes there is only one allowed. Three Gorges Dam isn't unique either but there is still only one allowed per game.

Putting aside the relevance of it being a wonder, it's the only "wonder movie" that I watch all of the way through because it's so cool!:goodjob:
