BTS game anyone?

I agree, we need 24 hour simultaneous pitboss, as it otherwise would be too slow to catch interest. However, we can make a sort of candid delay, by making the game run in Epic Speed. This means that UUs and UBs last longer, as well as research objectives would be relatively long term. We need a certain energy level of intensity, not long winded forum discussions, which only breeds crappy politics, where we want a semblance of team thinking. Epic, 24 hour simultaneous, also allows the team to think a good way ahead, but be forced to keep dramas of war and exploration much more intense, as a TV series you got to see at least 5 minutes of per day. We need people to feel motivated to log in per day, not per week, as a week-long game would take 52 turns a year, barely getting up 3-4 cities at most.

I think we are to lose more players by making it slow, formulaic and ritualistic, than by keeping a progressive pace to keep up suspense. As I said, Epic would balance out the diplomacy and research as well as wonder discussion challenge, as each build would take a bit longer time, but not too long.

provo...why are you so hung up on Epic. I cant see a demo-game of any kind making to the end with the same people starting it on that speed. And again I really do not think you have a clue to what the MTDG is...there is NO politics. Perhaps you should read a few team forums to figure out what this type of game is about instead of comparing it to the current demo game.

I've been on 3 of the 9 MTDG teams so far, and I have seen zero politics. I'm no statistician, but I think that sampling a third of the teams has to count for something :D

I have very little experience with Epic or Marathon speeds, so I can't really speak to that.

But a turn a week would be the absolute slowest the game would progress, and would usually progress much faster. Even in this game, when there weren't turn-player scheduling issues the save tended to move around 2 turns a week.

About gamespeed, by reading back old threads, I've noticed that I'm now almost 20% older than when I joined this MTDG!!! Imagine if this game had been on epic.

Your kids would be playing it at the end...

Yet I am only 5% older. Moved 2 jobs, 3 different houses, and lived in 2 states during that time. My youngest kid has doubled in age.

graduted universtiy, got married and built a house...moved up in a company 3 times, yup this game has been long.

Moved out to the country, had my first baby - who is 18 months old now. :)

I suppose we're about ready to put it to a vote, at this point.
Sounds like were down to about 4 options:
  1. Simultaneous Turns PitBoss - Epic Speed - 24 hr turn limit
  2. Simultaneous Turns PitBoss - Normal Speed - 24 hr turn limit
  3. Sequential Turns PitBoss - Normal Speed - 24 hr turn limit
  4. PBEM - Normal Speed - 24 hr turn limit enforced by Moderator

I'll be playing for sure it's #3 or #4.
Otherwise, I'll probably be reduced to lurker status since I can't commit to investing time every single day in this. [see: 18 month old baby]

same boat as you but 2 kids.

I think we need to decide if we want to vote all separate components or lump them like you did. BUT you didnt have the epic speed PBEM. :mischief::eek::crazyeye:

AGAIN one final plea...daily turns or too long of a game will reduce this to a prolonged "team" succession game and not a true demo game. Turn players will burn out and unless you have many turn players per team its going to crash and teams will quit. The winner will be what ever team has the best dedicated turn player or most turn players or the team that turns over complete control on every thing to the turn player( ie not a demo game but a dictator game).

This is so right-on, I can hardly believe it!
You hit the nail right on the head :hammer: - and said it better that I was able to.

As for my 4 options - I didn't hear anyone seriously suggesting an Epic speed PBEM (not that I want to cut my children's children out of the fun, mind you) but I think we can safely rule that option out.

I don't think we want to parcel the voting out into individual pieces... you could end up with some weird results.
Would be better to start with 6 or 7 options if we have too, and then have a top-2 or top-3 runoff election, maybe?

Well why do we have to have a 24 timer? We could easily have it longer and make it 48 hours and if needed we can increase the timer to make the right moves and be prepared for diplomacy. 24 hours if fine for a normal pitboss game, but not for a team one, like this.

After listening to some of the discussion in this thread, I now think that #3 is probably the best option for us. :)

If DaveMcW is willing to host a PitBoss - I'd vote for #3 also.
I've been convinced it's worth a try :D

uh oh bts i forgot...i am a little unsure how to play that game... :(....hmmm better put me on a strong team :D

I think your result in my pitboss game says you know a bit about playing BTS.
