The crossbowman has 20 base ranged combat strength. The swordsman has 20 base strength. Adding up all the modifiers to the longswordsman (10+30-20= +20%) his strength should be 24. Instead, it's showing as 24 (+45%?)

The crossbowman has +52% bonus off of a 20 base stregnth which should be 30 str, but instead it's showing as 27 (+35%).

I've never really looked at these before, but this is one instance where no matter how the calculation is done in the background, I should absolutely have the advantage except that I don't.

Anybody know what's going on?

The final strengths shown are calculated by the game, unless there is a bug inside - they are correct.
The modifiers are shown by UI and it might not show all of them (or show incorrectly). Try to analyze your promos, policies, beliefs, etc. and see if all is accounted for. If you find what is missing then we can fix it.

What is Resistance (Domination)?
Bonus to CS when fighting someone controling multiple capitals.
That's one of the anti-domination mechanics to make it possible to stop a full warmonger.
There is currently discussions in order to make it 1) Without effect in the territory of the Civ (the penalty stop the expansion of the warmonger, but does not allow to destroy them) 2) Depending on the warmonger penalties/score rather than the number of capital owned

I seem to recall somebody's mentioning that the calculation will not work properly unless the ranged attack icon is actually pressed and the target is available. What that means is that your archer has the cursor over a Longswordsman that it cannot shoot at - it is calculating the matter as though it were not ranged defence; if you were to be in range, hit the ranged attack button, then put the cursor over the unit, the calculation would be different.
