I think I've found a bug. I reinstalled the OS on my PC about 2 months ago, and when I set up CIV as proposed in the guide on the HoF-page, I noticed CIV running smooth in the very beginning and then starting to stutter more and more with the game becoming unplayable after a few minutes. I consulted the task-manager and found that it only ran on 1 of 8 cores (4 with HT) , and even with the core being fully overclocked, it was used 100%. I tested and think I've found out, that the Windows XP SP2 compatility mode seems to be the reason of this, because when running CIV normally again, so without compatility mode, the task got distributed over all cores making it run fluently again.
I didn't experience this in my prior installation of Windows 7 x64, so it's possible that this is caused by one of the Windows updates that got released in the meantime. It might even be the cause of an update missing, because I didn't install the updates unlocking the Windows 10 upgrade.
Unless I report otherwise, you can be certain that it's the Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode that caused this bug and this + the fix imo. should be mentioned in the guide from in a week at latest.

System:

Alienware M17xR4
Intel i7 QM-3630
ATI Radeon HD 7970M

Why do you use SP2 compatability mode and not SP3? I use the latter and it works fine.

The guide in the HoF specifically advises to use Win XP SP2 compatibility mode. I just tried out SP3 compatibility mode aswell, and tried Win 7 compatibility mode earlier. Whichever compatibility mode I enable, it makes the program run on only one Core. I'll research a little what could cause this, as finding a solution would fix a bug I have, where the process of CIV stays in the task-manager after quitting the game, so I have to force it's shutdown manually if I want to start the game again without rebooting.

The path which one shall add towards the shortcut to automatically start the game with BUFFY btw. differs between the description (the text) and the screenshot. Maybe that should get updated aswell.

I'm working on getting that page up to date :scan:

Hmm. I've been wondering about trying to get Mapfinder to work in Steam or dig up a drive to install Civ IV from disk. (Win 10.) What's this compatibility mode thing? I'm mildly tempted to try some more HoF games. (I have a dual boot iMac so conceivably could try Civ IV in OSX. Is Buffy finally working there?) Last I played I think was the 2 million game in XP. Is it worth trying to figure out Mapfinder/Buffy now? Burnout from that game seems to have passed ...

If you are talking about the MapFinder standalone program used to view your saves, you might also need to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0. I don't know if 3.5 (or whatever is current) is backwards compatible.

Yes that MapFinder. Back in XP I think the problem was using it with Steam. It may have been something more inconvenient than a bug. I forget. But I had disk installed version of CivIV then too. No problem with that. I still have disks, need a drive to install. I'm hoping ... :-) Otherwise, CivIV and Buffy seem to work fine in Steam. I don't know how much I'd want to tackle any Win 10 problems if they arise. Really want to avoid using Steam if possible though.
